“Your Whitley Needs You”
From Doug a committee member of Whitley Residents and Neighbourhood Watch Association (WRNWA):
Safety and Traffic Management Issues in Whitley
Residents of Whitley will have, at some time in recent months, experienced the difficulties presented by indiscriminate parking on Abbey Road and elsewhere in our vicinity by Jaguar/ Landrover employees and the adverse effect this had on traffic-flow during peak hours.
WRNWA worked with local councillors to resolve these issues and those problems have eased, at least, for now!
However, WRNWA’s attention is now focused on managing the fallout from the recent Council decision to build Tiverton Special School on the old Alice Stevens School site, as well as the intention to provide nursery places to support both schools. Read more
Timing of Traffic Signals on Leaf Lane
After our last update Roger received this email:
Can I ask what is going in with the timing of the lights on Leaf Lane coming out of Cheylesmore. The last I read they were going to be in our favour. However, this week they have definitely been changed. My husband has been on early shifts. So around 5.35am they take ages to change on one morning there were seven cars waiting but no change and no cars coming through from jaguar. This was the same all week and throughout the day too. Did I miss something?
Roger received these responses from the Traffic Management Team
20/12/2016
‘The timings for the traffic signals on Leaf Lane have not been altered.
We will get our maintenance engineer on site to check that the signals are operating correctly.
21/12/2016
I would like to inform you that our maintenance engineer has been to site today. He identified a fault with the signals and has rectified it.
Request for Lighting on Footpath to Whitley Primary Nursery
The Whitley Residents’ committee has requested for street lamps to light the footpath to the soon to be built Whitley Primary Nursery, as one of their safety concerns.
Roger received this from Rachel Goodyer, Street Lighting PFI Contract Officer:
Despite my best endeavours I have not managed to get lighting installed on the footway as part of the planning process for the new nursery on Alice Stevens School. But if anything else comes up that I can push for this I will do so.
St Christian's Road Parking Petition
Roger received confirmation from Liz Knight, Governance Services Officer, that the petition raised by the residents of St Christian's Road requesting to be added to the existing Cheylesmore Residents Parking Scheme, has been processed. The petition is to go straight to the Cabinet Member for City Services for her consideration.
This is the 18th petition that Roger has collected, sponsored & submitted in regards to the Cheylesmore Residents' Parking Scheme.
Why is Footpath to Nowhere Lit?
In our
21st February 2016 update residents asked us why the footpath to “nowhere” from Leaf Lane to the new JLR bridge still had lights working.
Roger received this from Rachel Goodyer, Street Lighting PFI Contract Officer
Hi Councillor Bailey
Sorry it has taken a while, but as promised the columns on the Leaf Lane footpath that leads to the river and stops due to the new road layout are programmed to be removed in February.
Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
On Christmas Eve Pauline had a wonderful surprise when she received a text from a local resident wishing to volunteer at the library.
27 people have now expressed an interest in volunteering and we have a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer coordinator in place. The next volunteers meeting is on Monday 23rd January at 3pm at the Cheylesmore Community Centre
If you are interested in volunteering to help keep the library open then please email:
cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.
The more volunteers that we have then the longer the opening hours can be.

‘3 Trees’ Peace Trail

Some years ago the council embarked on a project of planting 3 trees in each of its 18 wards. The Hazel, Maple & Holly trees are planted in a triangle to represent the 3 spires of Coventry that survived the blitz. However nothing can be found out about this project on the council website. Roger & a resident are trying to find out more about these trees.
Does anyone know the exact location of our 3 trees in Cheylesmore Ward? It is known that they’re on the Daventry Road but nothing more.
Here are some pictures of the trees in the other wards but not Cheylesmore.
Earlsdon Library Friends
Received from Earlsdon Library Friends:
This is our first email to update the community on efforts to maintain a sustainable library service and community facility in Earlsdon.
The survey
We’ve been overwhelmed by the level of support in the community and want to thank you all for the time you’ve taken to complete our questionnaire or talk to us on the high street. Over 300 local residents have shared their views with us and many of you have indicated that you’d like to get more involved in the project. It is clear that there is a real interest and viability in a community-led library and facility.
What’s next
We’re carefully considering what you’ve told us and are engaging with the Council to develop a realistic, sustainable plan for continuing library provision in Earlsdon. In the new year, we’re planning on running an event for the community to come and learn more about our plans, understand how you can get involved and share your thoughts with us.
Contact us
If you’ve got any thoughts or questions on the future of Earlsdon Library you can get in contact by emailing earlsdonlibraryfriends@gmail.com, check our new website at www.earlsdonlibraryfriends.wordpress.com or follow us on Twitter (@EarlsdonLF) or Facebook (@EarlsdonLibraryFriends).
London Road Cemetery Survey Results

Survey - Anti-Social Behaviour in the City Centre
From the Chair of Coventry Older Voices:
The City Council are consulting with the public on the introduction of a “Public Spaces Protection Order” (PSPO) to tackle anti-social behaviour in the City centre. We have been especially concerned for some time with problems caused by cycling and the use of skateboards in pedestrian areas, and the PSPO goes some way to dealing with this.
We are asking you to complete it online here.
We expect there will be a significant response from skateboarders in particular (most of whom are likely to be online). The more of us that complete the survey to express the views of older people, the more chance there is that that PSPO will be introduced, and that something will be done at last.
Bank Holiday Bus Running Day

At the same event, will be a small transport fair, for people who collect road transport related items (small entrance charge). The event runs from 10am to 4pm.

Police Appeal to Trace Suspect 'Dyed Red' in Stoke Attack
30/12/2016 - Police are appealing for information to help trace a man they believe attacked a woman in the Stoke area of Coventry on 19 December 2016.
The 29-year-old woman was walking under the A444 Bridge on Walsgrave Road at 4.50am on her walk to work when she was grabbed around the neck from behind.
