A number of imaging-related PhD positions with connections to SINAPSE research are currently open, including MRC Doctoral Training Partnership in Precision Medicine studentships at Edinburgh (deadline: 9 January) involving computer-aided CT imaging or optical coherence tomography imaging, and SPRINT-MND/MS PhD programme studentships at Aberdeen and Edinburgh (deadline: 20 January).

Image of the Month: Age associations with brain white matter tracts

Our January Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Simon Cox and Dr Stuart Ritchie, illustrates association magnitudes (standardised βs) between age and mean diffusivity of brain white matter tracts measured with MRI in a sample of more than 3,500 participants from the UK Biobank study. In this group of generally healthy middle-aged and older adults, tract-specific associations between age and less healthy white matter were strongest in thalamic and association pathways, and weakest in projection fibres.

Maria Clara Liuzzi has recently started her PhD studentship at the University of Glasgow, undertaking a project funded by The Neurosciences Foundation, AstraZeneca and SINAPSE. The general aim of her project is the performance, validation, and optimization of nuclear imaging as an useful tool to help in the early diagnosis and detection of brain tumours, as well as the validation of new antitumoral agents. The project will begin with the study and optimization of synthetic chemistry techniques for the development of new PARP-1 inhibitors (Olaparib-like) for the treatment of Glioblastoma and other brain tumours. After that will be the study and development of synthetic routes for the production of the relative radiotracers, that then will be used for pre-clinical imaging. The main imaging technique to be used will be the PET scan, therefore the radiotracers to be produced will be 18F-labelled. Maria studied Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Bari, Italy, from where she earned the MSc equivalent "Laurea Magistrale" degree, after a final research project in Medicinal Chemistry studying the development of new antitumoral drugs for the treatment of Ovarian Cancer. She then moved to the UK and, after spending a gap year in Manchester, completed a MRes course in Drug Discovery at the University of Strathclyde, where she was involved in a research project about the early-stage biological validation of new agents for targeting therapies against Advanced and Metastatic Prostate Cancer. She is looking forward to gaining expertise in the Medical Imaging field as a tool for diagnosis and treatment of Cancer, and in the future she hopes to continue working in Drug Discovery and Development for the study and treatment of Cancer Diseases.
