WINTER TIP
Space heating accounts for 34% of residential energy use in Tennessee. Spending time in a drafty room is not ideal. Spending money to heat uninvited cold air is not either. Now is the perfect time to identify and remedy these air leaks. Check around doors, door trim, windows, window trim, baseboards, outlets, switch plates, recessed lights, and any other gaps or holes in walls. If you can see light or feel cold air, you are throwing money into the wind! DIY fixes to air-seal and weatherize are a breeze. Caulk any small gaps, cracks, or holes around doors and trim, windows and trim, baseboards and walls. Use low expanding foam in a can for gaps larger than ¼”. Apply removable rope caulk around operable window sashes on old windows. Apply removable plastic window film to the trim around old windows that are especially leaky only after applying caulk where needed. Install weatherstripping on doors. Install door sweeps to the bottom of doors. Install foam gaskets behind outlet & switch plates. Install pipe insulation for your hot water lines.
