Got too many?
No such thing, right? Well, sometimes. Luckily, we buy used books! Make an appointment with Rob and he'll turn your old books into store credit (and then you can get new books!). We think of it as the most appealing way to reduce-reuse-recycle. Call the store for an appointment: 229-0774

STAFF PICKS
CORA'S PICK: The Fire by Night by Teresa Messineo
This book follows two army nurses during World War 2 - one on the Western Front, and one in the Pacific arena - during the final days of the war. Jo (the one in Europe) is left with 6 patients in a field hospital on the front line, with dwindling medicine and food, and several acute cases on her hands; and Kay has been captured by the Japanese and is taken to an internment camp in the Philippines, with horrific conditions. This is a page-turning adventure story, but to me the important thing it shows is the emotional impact of war, and that women could and did have things like shell-shock that we mainly associate with men during that time period.
JANE'S PICK: The March Trilogy by John Lewis
I settled in over the New Years weekend with John Lewis' graphic novel trilogy March. I knew it would be a tough read. This is Congressman Lewis' own story of his deep commitment and involvement in the civil rights movement, rooted in his call to preaching at an early age and his adherence to Gandhi's teachings of non-violence. Lewis' humility makes space for all the lost heroes of the movement to be remembered, and allows the unbelievable resilience of the freedom fighters to take center stage and leave readers stunned. A brutal struggle that is very much part of an ongoing story in our own lifetimes. (Book 3 of the trilogy recently won the National Book Award, each volume is sold separately)
CLAIRE'S PICK: American Housewife by Helen Ellis
This is a hysterical, wacky, irreverent collection of short stories - some of them could rightly be called vignettes - about seemingly normal housewives who turn out to be anything but. We find the women in these stories in unique situations such as being married to the best bra-fitter in Georgia or going on the reality tv show "Dumpster Diving With the Stars" with fellow-contestant John Lithgow. Helen Ellis is a true original!
