Dear <<First Name>>,
Happy 2017! Can you believe we are already halfway through our fiscal year? Since July, our community has welcomed two new rabbis, a director of youth engagement, and 70 new member families; celebrated over 100 lifecycle events; mourned the passing of 35 loved ones; experienced High Holy Days together; celebrated the formal installation of our senior rabbi; participated in 15 interfaith and community action projects; and had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of social, learning and cultural activities.
At this point in our first transition year, we have over 400 students enrolled in our religious school, over 100 madrachim and over 200 volunteers leading and participating in committees, task teams and community projects. Our partnerships with other Shalom Park agencies continue to grow, and our staff and lay leaders are working tirelessly to build relationships and address challenges that will help our synagogue be sustainable into the future.
Have you been part of this journey? Do you have a question about temple operations? Have you wanted to join a committee and are not sure where we need the most help? Are you interested in meeting new people or getting involved with a new group? We invite you to reach out to our executive director or director of member services to learn more about whatever is most important to you. And, if you're interested in hearing our rabbis reflect on their first six months at TBE, be sure to register for the special breakfast hosted by Brotherhood on Sunday, Jan. 8.

Justice Shabbat & MLK Parade
January 13-14, 2017
In 2000, TBE reached out to the fragile Grier Heights community to see how we could provide assistance and create fellowship with the people in that neighborhood. The results led to an incredible relationship with participation in several projects and the beginning of a robust Social Action outreach that continues to this day.
For the last 16 years, TBE has participated in the Martin Luther King Day, Jr., Parade with Grier Heights Presbyterian Church and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Last year, we celebrated the day with a pre-parade Interfaith Shabbat Service at First Methodist Church in uptown Charlotte. We will hold the service again this year from 9:00 am to 9:45 am on Saturday, January 14. The parade will start at 11:00 am at 9th and N. Tryon Streets and proceed to MLK, Jr. Blvd. Transportation is always provided back to the start of the parade. Learn more!

Annual Comparative Religion Series
Am I My Brother’s Keeper?
Roots of Ethical Responsibility
Tuesday Evenings:
January 31 - February 28, 2017
Final Session: Thursday, March 9, 2017
7:00 - 9:00 pm
TBE’s Comparative Religion Committee invites everyone to attend the 20th Annual Comparative Religion Series, Am I My Brother’s Keeper? Roots of Ethical Responsibility, that will examine the core teachings surrounding moral responsibility. Religious leaders will share interpretations of their faith’s teachings and offer insight into how they minister their congregations on divisive issues. The Series will culminate with a session about how young people are being inspired to mobilize on issues of social and environmental justice.
Religious leaders representing Judaism, Liberal and Conservative Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Hinduism will offer their points of view. The Series will conclude on Thursday, March 9, 2017, when we welcome Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center in Washington, D.C., a tireless advocate for social justice, and founder of Just Congregations. See the full schedule of speakers and plan to attend!
Thanks to the Ted and M.E. Hessberg Endowment which supports community outreach programs.
