Monthly e-newsletter
January 2017

Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy 2017! Can you believe we are already halfway through our fiscal year? Since July, our community has welcomed two new rabbis, a director of youth engagement, and 70 new member families; celebrated over 100 lifecycle events; mourned the passing of 35 loved ones; experienced High Holy Days together; celebrated the formal installation of our senior rabbi; participated in 15 interfaith and community action projects; and had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of social, learning and cultural activities.

At this point in our first transition year, we have over 400 students enrolled in our religious school, over 100 madrachim and over 200 volunteers leading and participating in committees, task teams and community projects. Our partnerships with other Shalom Park agencies continue to grow, and our staff and lay leaders are working tirelessly to build relationships and address challenges that will help our synagogue be sustainable into the future.

Have you been part of this journey? Do you have a question about temple operations? Have you wanted to join a committee and are not sure where we need the most help? Are you interested in meeting new people or getting involved with a new group? We invite you to reach out to our executive director or director of member services to learn more about whatever is most important to you.  And, if you're interested in hearing our rabbis reflect on their first six months at TBE, be sure to register for the special breakfast hosted by Brotherhood on Sunday, Jan. 8.
INTERFAITH EDUCATION & ACTION

Justice Shabbat & MLK Parade
January 13-14, 2017

In 2000, TBE reached out to the fragile Grier Heights community to see how we could provide assistance and create fellowship with the people in that neighborhood. The results led to an incredible relationship with participation in several projects and the beginning of a robust Social Action outreach that continues to this day.

For the last 16 years, TBE has participated in the Martin Luther King Day, Jr., Parade with Grier Heights Presbyterian Church and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Last year, we celebrated the day with a pre-parade Interfaith Shabbat Service at First Methodist Church in uptown Charlotte. We will hold the service again this year from 9:00 am to 9:45 am on Saturday, January 14. The parade will start at 11:00 am at 9th and N. Tryon Streets and proceed to MLK, Jr. Blvd. Transportation is always provided back to the start of the parade. Learn more!

Annual Comparative Religion Series

Am I My Brother’s Keeper?
Roots of Ethical Responsibility

Tuesday Evenings:
January 31 - February 28, 2017
Final Session: Thursday, March 9, 2017
7:00 - 9:00 pm

TBE’s Comparative Religion Committee invites everyone to attend the 20th Annual Comparative Religion Series, Am I My Brother’s Keeper? Roots of Ethical Responsibility, that will examine the core teachings surrounding moral responsibility. Religious leaders will share interpretations of their faith’s teachings and offer insight into how they minister their congregations on divisive issues. The Series will culminate with a session about how young people are being inspired to mobilize on issues of social and environmental justice.

Religious leaders representing Judaism, Liberal and Conservative Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Hinduism will offer their points of view. The Series will conclude on Thursday, March 9, 2017, when we welcome Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center in Washington, D.C., a tireless advocate for social justice, and founder of Just Congregations. See the full schedule of speakers and plan to attend!

Thanks to the Ted and M.E. Hessberg Endowment which supports community outreach programs.

CLERGY CONNECTION

Six Months as Your Rabbi: Navigating Protests and Partisan Politics by Rabbi Asher Knight

New rabbis are often given advice. One sage suggestion: steer clear of divisive issues and partisan politics. To be honest, the last six months have not been easy for a new rabbi who is trying to learn the landscape of our congregation and Shalom Park. Between protests over the killing of Keith Lamont Scott, which also revealed deep-rooted racial inequities in our city, and the painful and contentious state and national election – it’s often felt like I am tiptoeing through a minefield.

Over the last six months I’ve learned that Temple Beth El is a diverse congregation. We are proud that our congregation has responded to God’s call to spread justice and righteousness. Our members want the promise of tomorrow to exist for every human being, because we are created in God’s image and endowed with certain unalienable rights. As a community of faith in Charlotte, North Carolina, we have a vested interest in the potential and promise of our city, our state, and our country.

Yet, a significant number of congregants have expressed worry and concern about our polarized political and cultural environment. Devastated by the rise in anti-Semitism and hate speech, it is not hyperbole to say that every day since my arrival, Temple Beth El members have commented to me about concerns over extremism, toxic partisan politics, the future of our country, Israel, international affairs, and the state of the environment. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Austin Osborne

One of our fifth grade students has written, illustrated and published a beautiful Chanukah book! Austin Leo Osborn is the author of ‘Twas the Night Before Chanukah. The book grew out of an assignment Austin was given in school, and he was excited to turn the Christmas story into a Chanukah story. He decided since there are not many Chanukah books he should have his story published. He worked on the edits and illustrations, and with the support and encouragement of his parents we have a new Chanukah book!

Austin decided the proceeds from the sale of his book should be used to benefit TBE's Religious School. THAT is what we call "Making a Difference." Austin's book is available in our Discovered Traditions Gift Shop and in the Religious School lobby for $8.
GIVING

Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte: A Gift to Us All

Much has been expounded upon the traditional Federation–Synagogue relationship.  For some communities, it’s comfortable and collaborative; for others, it is the source of much hand-wringing and consternation. Here in Charlotte, we are fortunate to benefit from the former, thanks in large part to our shared Shalom Park experience.

Charlotte is blessed with a robust and dynamic Jewish community, and Federation is proud of all we contribute to make it so. But even among the dozens of agencies, programs, and initiatives that make up the fabric of our extraordinary community, synagogues, like TBE, are uniquely suited to instill a love of Judaism and a sense of belonging and connection in our community. Federation recognizes this, and we are proud to work closely with our local synagogues to enhance their impact. Read more >>
STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Nathalie Friedlander

Our committed and caring staff are a highlight of TBE life. In July we welcomed Nathalie Friedlander to the Temple team as the Hospitality Manager. Many of you have met her at the reception desk. Here's more about her:
  • What have you found in the past few months has been the most important work you’ve done for TBE? I think the most important work I have done thus far was assisting with the High Holy Day events. I was able to help with all aspects from behind the scenes to hands on the day of.
  • Share something you're looking forward to in 2017. I look forward to continuing to work with TBE’s congregants, lay leaders and staff on upcoming events. I have enjoyed the last six months.  There is so much work and heart that goes into all TBE events.
  • Who is your favorite author? Having two children, I have not made the time to read adult books. However we read a lot of children's books. My favorite is Stan Kirby, the author of Captain Awesome and Nacho Cheese Man.
  • What is your all-time favorite TV show? The Walking Dead (AMC television show)
  • What are your hobbies? Cooking
  • Tell us about your family. I have a husband, Spencer (who grew up at TBE), and two daughters: Maddie, age 7 1/2 and Ella, age 6.
  • How long have you lived in the Charlotte area? Since the fifth grade, so 36 years!

Time to start thinking about Purim! Every year, TBE volunteers deliver 200 Shalach Manot Purim bags to our seniors (over 75+) and home-bound congregants.
