Help Azule thrive

in 2017

Looking back on the past year, it is incredible to see how Azule has grown in its mission to bring the arts and community together in Madison County and beyond.

2016 proved to be our busiest year yet with a constant influx of incredible artists from across the country including poets, composers, painters, animators, writers, illustrators, dancers, sculptors and more coming to Azule. It has been a true pleasure to see all these artists get inspired through the beauty of Azule, and focus that energy into amazing works of art.

This year has also seen new endeavors to reach out to the Madison County community.
Last February we kicked off our monthly community potlucks to great success. Not only are the potlucks great fun, they provide an excellent opportunity for our resident artists to share their work with our community. Our potlucks aren’t the only way we have been engaging with our local community. In addition to facilitating a new public mural in the Bluff community, we have partnered with the Madison County Group Home in Hot Springs to bring in resident artists to do arts projects with the home’s developmentally disabled residents.

Additionally, Azule continued to provide a unique refuge for a diverse array of groups to come together for workshops, skillshares, and retreats that explored subjects such as storytelling, dance, documentary filmmaking, and natural medicine.

Will you help Azule continue to thrive in its mission to bring together the Community and Arts in Madison County?
Please consider making a tax deductible donation to Azule so we can continue to provide this unique environment where artists and community meet, work and learn together through the arts in their many forms!

   Meet our
   Resident

   Glynn Cartledge

“As an artist who has spent over twenty-five years working as a defense lawyer, I am primarily concerned with issues of criminal justice.  My current series, P2P, Prisoners to Paper dolls, is a study of how we as a society react to and treat people exiting prisons. The general public’s prevalent perception of these citizens is negative, singular, and unmindful.  Their past isolation from the world and their current unanchored existence make it easy for us to simplify and objectify them, tagging them with lifelong monikers that acutely restrict their ability to participate fully in any community.

“Currently I paint figurative depictions of this population presented as paper dolls with accompanying, but separate, clothing or environments.  Included in the project are archival documents illuminating the system that arrested, prosecuted, incarcerated, and supervised them.  Each “set” has a core painting of the ex-inmate, presented as a two-dimensional, whimsical toy at the mercy of societal precepts and stereotyping.  The paintings accompanying the focal painting will include pieces of clothing that the viewer can interchangeably place on the core figure.  Each ex-convict will have occasion-directed clothing and accessories, along with environments.  The documentation provides context and is presented as extended captions.”

AZULE Portrait

Project

All these years you have been part of the ongoing
AZULE Portrait Project

Hundreds of these portraits are now on canvas and ready for you to sign.

The AZULE PORTRAIT PROJECT
is for us a way to parallel the continuity that Camille has shown in her building Azule - the place. Representing you, participants to the Fall event, and asking you to sign and add a memory or thought to your picture is deepening your and our relationship to Azule in Bluff, Hot Springs, Madison County, North Carolina...

"The transformation that occurred within our group could not have manifested as graciously had we not been in the beautiful and deeply accommodating environment of AZULE. This place has nourished me and allowed for a sweet opening of my mind and heart. Thank you." Liana Johannaber from GO, Green Opportunities, Asheville, NC.
