Welcome to the latest edition of AMIA’s My Mango, your weekly roundup of the latest industry forecasts, wholesale prices and marketing activities, delivered to your inbox every Tuesday throughout the season.

Crop Forecast

As the season progresses in each region, the timing of harvest for each variety and weekly volume estimates will be adjusted. Please check the updated forecast and crop flow tables as they are released.

Regional Reports

 

Darwin and Katherine

The Darwin and Katherine season has come to an end for 2016.
 

Kununurra

The Kununurra season has finished.  
 

Burdekin and Bowen

Harvest has come to an end for many growers in the region, but several growers are expected to dispatch light volumes until early next week.
 

Mareeba and Dimbulah

Good volumes are coming out of this region, with growers well into harvest. We have updated our crop forecast/crop flow table for this region as the crop has come on a little quicker than originally forecast. Volume will continue to be harvested through January, with late season varieties commencing in mid-late January.


South East and Central Queensland

Small volumes of fruit are being dispatched from the northern part of this region, with most growers expected to start in early-mid January.
 
The AMIA team will add to these regional descriptions as more information becomes available.

BeeConnected App Facilitates Communication Between Farmers and Beekeepers 


The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) and Cotton Australia are calling on all farmers and beekeepers to use online tools to better communicate with each other to protect bees and crops. 

Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay says the BeeConnected app facilitates communication between farmers and beekeepers as a tool to ensure crop protection is conducted safely, responsibly and according to label requirements. 

The BeeConnected tool enables collaboration between beekeepers, farmers, consultants and spray contractors to facilitate best practice pollinator protection. Users registered on BeeConnected are alerted when beekeeping or crop protection activities are logged within a 10 kilometre radius. 

Farmers and beekeepers should use this checklist: 
  1. Plan Ahead:
    Register your farm or hives on BeeConnected to alert and communicate to local farmers and beekeepers in your area. 
  2. Log Activities:
    Growers, consultants and spray applicators log upcoming crop protection activities. 
  3. Communicate and Cooperate:
    All users can then use BeeConnected’s built-in messaging service to coordinate activities or privately share any relevant information they choose to. 
BeeConnected is available at no cost on iPhone, Android and desktop computers and is run by CropLife Australia in partnership with AHBIC.

Asian Export Promotion


Our promotional activities in Asia are now underway with campaigns in Wellcome supermarkets in Hong Kong; Costco in Japan; Homeplus in Korea; and NTUC FairPrice, CMM Sheng Siong and Cold Storage supermarkets in Singapore.

We have engaged with exporters, importers and retailers to create bespoke campaigns for each market and target customer. Specific activities funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia include in store demonstrations, point of sale (POS) material with “GO AN AUSSIE MANGO” themed posters, wobblers, bunting, store handling and merchandising guides, varietal posters and a sales incentive competition. Exporters are supporting the campaigns by providing mangoes for in store tastings and retailers and importers are funding print advertisements and online activity.

To assist retailers with their advertising and social media activities we have provided Australian Mangoes collateral, including: our brand style guide and logo; high resolution images of the different varieties; recipes and accompanying high resolution images; lifestyle images; tips and trivia; our #mangoemojiplease image and video; and other online content including short videos for social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Mangoes have been shared in much of the nation's media this past week, with Christmas festivities increasing demand for the fruit of summer. 
 
Indeed, Nine Kitchen shared a recipe for macadamia and mango tart, Women's Weekly printed recipes for ham and mango salad, mango cheesecake and 'Aussie Mess', Take 5 shared a recipe for turkey rolls with fresh mangoes, and That's Life! included recipes for summer fruit cheesecake, and turkey and mango glass noodle salad. Meanwhile, Woolworths printed festive mango recipes in their December issue, and Australian Regional Media shared a three-page mango recipe spread in their nationwide publications. 

The media have also maintained interest in the satellite and scanner technologies currently being implemented within the mango industry, with stories discussed on Alice Springs and Darwin ABC radio, and in Good Fruit and Vegetables

 

SOCIAL MEDIA

 
In social media, some of Australia's favourite YouTube foodies have begun experimenting with mangoes as we head into the peak of summer, as Tess Begg leads the way, sharing a recipe for mango and berry 'nicecream' to her 141,000 subscribers! 
 
On our own channels, the Facebook page has posted a recipe video for chargrilled mango and capsicum skewers, which has already reached 43,000 people, whilst the Instagram page has seen an increase in average engagement with 50% of last week's posts receiving over 200 likes!
