Lesson 2087: Joseph - Matt.2:19-23, Luke 2:39-52

Joseph learned in a dream that the death of Herod made it safe for him to return from Egypt.

But Joseph heard that Herod's son Archelaus, the new ruler of Judea, had killed 3000 Jews.

Joseph probably wanted to return to Bethlehem: It was closer to Egypt (shorter trip with baby).

And it was the most beautiful city in Israel, the royal city of David, convenient to the temple.

But instead he decided to return to Nazareth. Herod’s milder son Antipas ruled Galilee.

Joseph was a man of great character - responsible, obedient, and righteous.

We see very little of him, just a final glimpse 12 years later when Jesus stayed at the temple.

When they found Jesus, He said, "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"

Jesus did not become proud or think less of His parents; He was obedient to them.

It seems almost certain Joseph died before the crucifixion, probably before the public ministry.

There is no mention of Joseph in the wedding feast at Cana. John 2 If he had been alive, Joseph would probably have been mentioned with Mary.

There is also the clue that Simeon spoke only to Mary. Simeon prophesied "a sword will pierce your own soul too" Luke 2:35

This indicates that Mary, but not Joseph, would suffer the death of their child.
