Hello from the new UF/IFAS Extension Fruit Production Agent for Lake, Orange, and Marion Counties

My name is Juanita Popenoe and I have been an Extension Agent in Lake County for 13 years working with commercial ornamental horticulture, and I am now going back to my roots working with fruit. Although originally from south Florida, my fruit production experience has been with temperate fruit crops in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington State. I officially start as the fruit agent January 16, 2017.
I would like to make a few changes as I settle into the job. The first order of business is to purge the email lists. I will be using emails to send out timely reminders about classes, weather, and other news. Because I work with all types of fruit, you may receive some emails that do not apply to your crop. Hopefully the news will still be useful. Because I have started too late in the season to effectively implement Weather Watch, I will try and provide timely weather information through this email format for this season. Weather Update from Fred Crosby:
Looks like things are staying on track for some cold during the day Fri and Sat morning. The machines and national weather service numbers as of late this evening are looking good to me ... one large difference for this one is that the center of the surface hi will move rapidly from central TX east to the Atlantic coast of GA/FL during the Fri morn to Sat morn time frame; this will bring light winds during Fri nite at least to the north half of the peninsula with a forecasted 5 deg F or less temp/dewpoint spread along with the forecasted low and mid 30s min temps, i.e., frost?  If I were to draw a line on a FL map right now it would be from about Pierson to Okahumpka and then down into northeast Hillsborough for Sat am with some frost to the north of the line, but still some lower chances on west side down to about Arcadia. I don't know if national weather service will introduce any frost for Sat am. Update with any changes tomorrow.
