New SEM-EDX installed enabling 100,000 X magnification

AGR is proud to announce the installation of a new tungsten-filament SEM featuring class leading technology combined with EDX capabilities.  The system is comprised of a JEOL IT300 electron microscope and a Bruker Quantax 200 X-ray spectrometer. AGR routinely uses SEM-EDX for stone identification, fracture diagnosis, and compositional analysis.

The new system will enable us to analyze lighter elements (including boron), create compositional maps, and achieve higher resolution than ever before. In addition, a larger chamber size and low-vacuum technology allow analysis of product liability samples with minimal sample preparation/alteration. In addition, visitors to AGR will appreciate a view of its operation firsthand via the 50 inch TV mirroring the display.

AGR Publishes new White Paper

The White Paper entitled “Effect of Coatings on adhesion of labels” was just published in the current issue of Glass Worldwide Magazine.

Hot end and cold end coatings are necessary to assure that non-refillable glass containers will move properly through high speed filling lines and to assure that the surface of these containers are adequately protected from becoming damaged during sliding contact.

When these coatings are improperly applied, performance problems of the coated containers can be observed. One such problem is the lack of adhesion of paper labels when using common glues.

In this White Paper, Gary Smay summarizes the results of studies to determine the effect of tin oxide and polyethylene coatings on label adhesion when using casein-type glue.

Celebrating 90 Years of Service to the Glass Industry

2017 marks the 90th year since AGR was originally founded by Dr. Frank Preston. We will be marking this occasion throughout the year in a number of ways including the release of several more of Dr. Preston’s papers.

For this first opportunity we wanted to reveal a unique experience for him, to shed some additional light onto the events that shaped him and his connection to historical events. Dr. Preston, a renowned expert on all aspects of glass, was invited to attend the testing of the atomic bomb on Bikini Atoll in July 1946. He wrote two short papers on the experience which we have made available in our Library: THE WARFARE OF THE GODS and REHEARSAL FOR DOOMSDAY.

Both provide a unique perspective into the event and the man witnessing the event.  We hope you find them interesting. Visit our White Papers Library to download both and to view all of our White Papers.
FEATURE STORY:

AGR now offering value packages for Private Training Seminar combinations

AGR has created a series of two seminar packages available for Private/In-Plant Training.  Our popular “Fracture 1: Testing and Breakage Diagnosis” and our “Glass Container Technology” Seminar are suggested as the foundations from which a second seminar can be packaged.

The combined four or five day seminar offerings include:

Fracture 1  +  Evaluation and Lightweighting
Fracture 1  +  Coating Technology
Fracture 1:  +  Audit of Glass Plant Operations

Glass Technology + Evaluation and Lightweighting
Glass Technology  + Coating Technology
Glass Technology + Audit of Glass Plant Operations

By adding the second seminar, our customers will realize a significant cost savings over the prices of buying the two seminars independently.

The customer benefits from the efficiency of utilizing just one set of instructors for both seminars and ensuring that the package can be completed within the confines of just one week (particularly useful if personnel  from multiple plants travel to a central location).

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that fiberglass threads contain stones similar to those found in container and flat glass?
These uvarovite crystals give the appearance of green emeralds encased in a drop of water. In actuality, they are solid crystalline stones in a fiberglass bead. Interestingly, the composition places these crystals in the garnet family of minerals. If you have questions regarding stones you can “ASK OUR EXPERTS” or send us a sample for ANALYSIS.
If you would like to learn how to define and quickly analyze stones as well as learn the steps to correct the problem, sign up for our “Stones in Glass: Analysis and Identification” Training Seminar to be held on our Butler, PA, USA campus May 4-5 and October 3-4, 2017.

TRAINING
First Fracture Diagnostician Certification Seminars get underway in Munich and Butler in Q1

The New “Fracture 3: Glass Fracture Diagnostician Certification” Seminar builds on the popularity of our Basic and Advanced Testing and Fracture Diagnosis seminars, both of which are prerequisites.

This seminar consists of advanced topics that will provide an in-depth look into key issues related to breakage. The critical focus is on workshops using advanced fracture analysis techniques. Successful completion will earn AGR Certification of your skills for solving complex glass container breakage issues.

This new Open Enrollment F3 Certification Seminar will be conducted three times in 2017:

  • Munich, Germany February 28- March 3
  • Krakow, Poland September 19–22
  • Butler, PA USA November 28– December 1
