JANUARY 2017 PROGRAM

Jane Connor-Ziser

ABSTRACT PORTRAIT PAINTING
With over 25 years of experience, 19 of them in digital imaging and evolving technologies, the techniques Jane has developed facial retouching and enhancement and portrait painting are widely emulated by photographers and digital artists worldwide through her classes and educational products.  Jane has lectured and taught classes all over the world.  She is a highly respected pro imaging artist and photographer in her own right and shares her knowledge freely with freelance artists, photographers, color labs, schools of photography, universities, elementary schools, community art programs and private tutoring through her classes, mentoring programs and educational DVD's.  Considered to be one of the most versatile artists in the industry, Jane's engaging style, impressive knowledge of her field and her easy and entertaining way of presenting challenging material makes her one of the most sought after instructors.
                             Creativity                     Imagination

It's something that we all share as human beings.  It's what we humans have used to create our society, our art and our lives - all of the good and all of the bad in our created world has come from someone's creative, imaginative mind.  Some people seem to be born creative;  they exude creativity and spontaneity wherever they go.  Others never discover their hidden gift....maybe because they are afraid to explore something foreign to their normal, controlled existence, or perhaps when they were curious children they were told one too many times that curiosity killed the cat and to stop asking so may questions because things just "are".  And then there are people like me, insanely curious and excited to explore but are not always able to put into words, music or onto paper these "things" that live so colorfully in our imaginations.  I'm not lying; I have to work at it and the way that I do it is to choose creative exercises that I'm not good at that force me into new territory where I can learn how to learn again.  I took up playing the tabla drums at one point.  I'm really, really bad at it.  But I did it enough that I reached a point where I actually felt the rhythm and it was pretty awesome.  We won't talk about my songwriting or snow skiing adventure BUT this evening I'd like to share with you one of my photo are adventures, Abstract Portrait Painting.  I'll get one started and take you through my process and during the presentation I'll share my own methods and challenges in becoming more creative, why I do it, how I select a project and how I walk myself through the tough parts.  Please feel free to chime in with your own experience and let's make it an evening in which we can all inspire each other!

In order to run a good organization, we rely on volunteers.  These positions are greatly appreciated by all.  A lot of our members double up on committees.  We would love to have your assistance on any of our committees.  You get to learn more about BPPA and get to know everyone even more!
If you are interested, please contact our President, Gigi O'Dea.

...From Your President

Greetings... What a great meeting we had in January with Randy Vanduinen.  We missed lots of our members who were gone for either health or educational purposes.  Hoping  to see everyone back this coming month for another great program.  We are so lucky to have Jane Connor-ziser back to share her knowledge and talents with us.

This past month, many of our members committed to expanding their education and skills by taking the Certified Professional Photographer's course.   There were nine of us in the class and we spend three long days together learning the fine details of our profession.  I think we would all attest, that it was worth every moment.  We had a great time and so glad to be learning it with friends.  A few of us have already taken the next step to take the exam portion and passed with flying colors.  It's a great thing to add to our resume and our clients will be better for it with our new found knowledge.

One of the benefits of being part of this guild is the friendships and comradery we have with other professionals.  I love that we were on this journey together.  I know it has been mentioned many times over the past few years, but I'm so proud of all of us that made the commitment to make it happen.  I can't thank Al Audleman enough for taking the time to offer this class to us.

Being a member of BPPA has many benefits...

Joining a professional organization in your chosen field indicates a true commitment to your profession.  That professionalism is a great source of confidence for your clients.

You are a working professional who has signed on to a code of ethics and one who is managing your business in a professional and ethical manner.  You have a business license where required and, of course, you have a sales tax number.  Your clients will know that you are operating your business in a professional manner!

You receive opportunities for education every month of your life!

You are able to use the BPPA logo in your advertising.

You will get to know your fellow photographers in a social and educational setting.  Networking with other professionals in your field is a huge benefit both in terms of shared knowledge and perhaps even more importantly in receiving referrals from other members.  Your skills and areas of expertise will be known.

You have the support of a strong organization behind you should you have any difficulties and/or questions about your business.

You have opportunities for scholarship awards that may be applied to any educational program sponsored by BPPA, Florida Professional Photographers, or the Professional Photographers of America.

You have access to other working professionals at monthly meetings.  As you get to know them, they will be happy to assist you with questions pertaining to your profession such as dealing with a particular client, types of equipment, lighting knowledge, promotions that work, filing images, etc.

Your photography will continue to improve by entering the Print of the Month Competition.  What do other members think of a particular print you may have created?  This Monthly Competition is here for you to find out.  And, just to stretch your creativity, there is the always fun themed Creative Quarterly.

Three times per year, Salon Competitions are held.  As a member, you are eligible to have your work judged by outside judges under specified conditions.  These competitions are incredible learning experiences and great exposures to new and marvelously creative images.

PRESTIGE – LEARNING – FRIENDSHIP – FUN

BPPA IS THE BEST!!!

If you have not become a member, or need to renew, check out the membership section of the newsletter on how to do it.  If you know
of other photographers who might benefit from our guild, bring them along, we would love to have them!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting.  If you are a member, please remember to wear your badge.

The 2017 Membership Renewal is now due.  I recently emailed a .PDF application to the members.  You can also click here to access the Membership Application from our website.  The PDF application can be opened in Macs and PCs.  All you need to open it is Adobe Reader, which is a free download.  When you open the file, several tools appear on the right side.  Click the fill and sign tool to complete the application on your computer.  Each time you click this tool a new text box appears.  You then type your information.  You can also line up your text if you want to as well.  Print the application, and viola, you are done!  You can also print the application and fill it out by hand.  The full membership, Active Members, must also submit their 2017 Sales Tax Certificate.  You can obtain that document online from the Florida Sales Tax Department when you log into your account.

If you have not done so, please bring your paperwork and check to the next meeting on February 13, 2017.  Our speaker is the awesome and talented Jane Connor-Ziser.  However, if you are not able to attend the meeting, mail everything to me (including your check) to:

Members, please check your information on the Membership page of our website at www.bppafl.com.  You can also click here to access this page.  It is important that your information is correct for two reasons.  Number one, visitors to the site have access to photographers in our area, which could possibly result in business for your company.  Number two, it is the best way to get information about other members in case you need to reach them or give them a referral.

There is also a slideshow on the home page.  If you would like to "show off" some of your best work, email me three images to
dwilliams@turnerflorida.com.  Size the images to 1,000 pixels on the longest side at about a 150 to 200 dpi. That is all that is necessary to get your photographs noticed on the home page of our website!
