12U/14U Wild in Outdoor Tourney Play

The 12U/14U Wild traveled to the Flathead Valley Winter Classic in Kalispell MT this past weekend. They warmed up for their first game by practicing with the host team, Flathead Fusion, Thursday night. After a Friday team spaghetti feed, they headed off to their first battle--Missoula in -3°F weather on an outdoor rink. On Saturday, the girls played two games against Bozeman and Elk Valley. The Wild played good, hard hockey, which they followed with a team movie night and parking lot BBQ.

In their final game, the Wild faced their host team, The Fusion, in the warmest weather of the weekend—a balmy 16°F with a dusting of fresh snow. Overall, the girls played great hockey, enjoyed their time together, made new friends, and competed against other hard-working, all-girl teams. Congratulations to the 12U/14U Wild for their heart and work ethic at this tournament!

Girls' Try Hockey Event Breaks Record

44 players registered for WWFHA’s Girls’ Try Hockey for Free event on Sunday at Highland Ice Arena, with more walking up at the day of the event!

With just enough equipment to gear everyone, the 25 volunteer coaches (veterans and new coaches) really make it successful along with our off-ice staff. Thank you to all of our volunteers!

The kids had a blast and so did the adults. After an hour of skating and playing hockey many exhausted but smiling kids came off the ice. Many immediately signed up for the Washington Wild Beginner class, starting this Sunday.

Largest Beginner Class Ever Starts Sun.

44 players have registered for the Washington Wild Beginner Hockey 1 and Hockey 2 classes, which begin this Sunday at Highland Ice Arena at 10:15am!

This is our largest class on record, spurred on by the recent Girls’ Try Hockey for Free events over the last several months.

We can't wait to get on the ice with this exciting group of new female hockey players, age 4 - 9!

Beginner Coaches Needed

We need you! If you play hockey or know how to skate, we want you to become a coach for the Washington Wild Beginner program on Sunday mornings at Highland.

Make it fun and help with your friends! Reach out to your adult teams and leagues to help us recruit more coaches to inspire the next generation of female players!

Even if you can’t make it every time, we would love to have you on the ice when you are available.

Each session lasts ten weeks, with the next session running January 15 through April 2 from 10:15 – 11:15am.

Contact Kelly Goscinski, beginner coach coordinator, to help full-time or part time (kellyrgos@gmail.com) to learn the basic requirements to be on the ice.

2017 PNAHA WASHINGTON STATE FEMALE DEVELOPMENT CAMP

All Washington female hockey players who are born in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 are eligible to attend this camp at the Xfinity Community Rink in Everett, January 28 & 29, 2017.

WWFHA encourages all of-age Washington Wild players to participate, and all other players to watch the event so they can see the top players in the state skate together. Do not miss this once-a-year opportunity to be seen by evaluators, and possibly be chosen to attend the USA Hockey Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs, CO in June, which is a precursor to the USA Hockey National Camp.

Players improve and test their skills at the camp by playing with and against other female players from all over WA state in skill sessions (first day) and scrimmages (second day). Additional ice time, exposure to a broad pool of players and coaches, and the opportunity to compete at a higher level aid in players’ growth and development.  Whether or not a player is selected to move on to subsequent USA Hockey camps, she will gain from this unique, fun and challenging hockey experience. Last year, eight Wild players were selected from the WA state camp to attend the Pacific District camp!

Sports Specialization Is Making Youth Less Athletic

A new study by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health which included over 1,500 high school athletes found that athletes who specialized in one sport were twice as likely to report a lower extremity injury as compared to those who played multiple sports. It was also found that 60% of athletes that specialized in one sport sustained a new lower extremity injury.

This study got a lot of publicity because early sport specialization has been a hot topic as of late. Most of the arguments against early sport specialization are from rehab professionals, surgeons, and well-informed strength and sport coaches. The frustration of these professionals is all the push back or lack of understanding that the parents have when they so desperately want their kid to succeed at an early age. So instead of just relying on anecdotal cases, it’s nice to have more legitimate studies that can be brought to the parent’s attention as evidence.

Youth programs started out as an avenue to allow kids to play a sport in an organized environment. This helped kids develop self-esteem, peer socialization, work ethic, and general levels of fitness. It also allowed kids to sample a variety of sports and potentially start developing a passion for some of them. It also allowed time for them to recognize the sport they are best at. These were the days when a sports season lasted somewhere around 4 months before the next season came around and the focus would shift. But in the last decade, youth sports have morphed into highly competitive leagues and year around sports specialization.
