NEWS OF COMING EVENTS
Summer Sounds concerts 2017
The annual Summer Sounds concerts attract many new visitors to the Botanic Gardens. In 2017 the concerts will run over two consecutive weekends -
28 and 29 January, and
4 and 5 February, from 5:30 to 7:30pm each evening. The music includes Jazz ’n Jive, World Sounds, Family Frolic and Big Band Beat. Bring along your family and friends to enjoy outdoor picnicking, live music, socialising and dancing – all within the beautiful landscape of Australia's largest collection of native plants.
More information can be found on the Summer Sounds 2017 section of the Friends website, at
http://www.friendsanbg.org.au/Summer_Sounds_2017_Homepage.
The concerts are a partnership between the Gardens and the Friends. We would like to thank the many Friends who have responded to our earlier call for volunteers; we currently have about
11 vacancies to fill. If you are able to help out during this period, please check out the available roles and timeslots (also on the Summer Sounds 2017 section of the Friends website). No prior experience is required and guidance will be provided. The organisers can be contacted at
summerconcerts@friendsanbg.org.au or by calling 0421 131 898. And if you need help with the sign-in sheet, please contact David More at
david@more.id.au.
New Walks at the Gardens – Bushland Nature Walk and Who Did That – Children’s Discovery Trail
If you are looking for some interesting new things to do this summer, try out two new walks at the Gardens. The Bushland Nature Walk meanders through the bushland precinct of the Gardens, and is part of the local Black Mountain environment.
Children love to learn by 'doing' so the rangers have designed a fun 30-minute activity perfect for young ones. The ‘Who Did That’ Trail begins just beyond the Main Path, past the café, and provides activity stations that introduce children to the concept that plants are important for animal biodiversity.
Information about each of these walks can be found online at
https://parksaustralia.gov.au/botanic-gardens/do/walks.html or at the Visitor Centre.
Thursday Talks 2017
The popular Thursday Talks will resume for 2017 on Thursday 2 February with an address by Tim Fischer AO. Tim has been Vice-Chair of the Global Crop Diversity Trust since 2012 and will speak on the very interesting topic, ‘From Gallipoli Oaks Collected by John Monash to the Crop Trust and Svalbard Vault: collecting seeds matters more than ever’. The talk will start at 12:30pm in the Theatret
Further information about the Talks for the early part of the year, including any changes to the advertised program, can be found in the Friends’ Calendar at www.friendsanbg.org.au/Calendar.
