    International Day
The English International School of Bratislava welcomes our students, families, friends and staff back from the winter break, holidays and festivities.  We hope that each of you spent some quality time with your family and friends, had plenty of laughter and took a moment to reflect on those things that are most important to you as you welcomed in the new year, 2017.

Therefore, the second half of the school year is well underway with staff and students once again actively engaged in teaching and learning. We are excited about the educational challenges that lay ahead of us and know you will continue to assist us in our efforts to make our school the best it can possible be.

As we get back to our business at hand, we remember that the development of the students at EIS Bratislava is our first priority. In the words of Maria Montessori: “The adult must recognise that he and she must take second place, endeavor all they can to understand the learner, and to support and help the learner in the development of their life. This should be the aim of family, school and community”, therefore, we as a whole, strive to ensure that our students are at the center of everything we do.

In the coming days and months, we must continue to assist our learners on their path of learning, discovery and inquiry. We should establish good routines, habits and order within the lives of our students. This will ensure that the student understands that we are paying close attention to their learning needs and are not distracted by the demands of our social and professional lives. This is the basis for establishing a set of expectations for our students and ultimately it helps them feel safe, secure and challenged in their continued path of learning.

This term will once again be a very busy term with new units of work being introduced and developed across the whole school, final preparations being refined and in place for our ‘Diploma Programme Authorisation visit’ on 6 and 7 March 2017.  The visit will be conducted by IBO Autharised team members, Ms. Larissa Korabelshchikova from the Russian Federation and Mrs. Jane Hanna from the Netherlands. We welcome both members to our school.

It will also be the time when various students from our MYP take part in our annual school ski trip to Donovaly.  Let’s just hope for a nice constant fall of snow before 12 March.

A big congratulation in the last week of term to all our primary school students who performed in the Slovak Poetry recital. Well done!

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our primary school students, in their amazing performance of ‘Charles Dickens - A Christmas Story’.  Together as a team, you managed to successfully pull it off in such a short amount of time and high student absence due to the flu epidemic at the end of the school year. It was a remarkable job and a lovely start to the festive season.  Well done to you all and thanks to parents, family, friends and staff for both your involvement and for coming along and supporting our young talent!

Colin McDonnell

Clubs

Dear Parents, all clubs, both teacher driven and external clubs will continue the same as per last term on Tuesday, 17 January.  Baby-sitting club will commence as normal on Monday, 9 January. Please, if you know your child will be away from school, please inform the school office to let their club teacher know of their absence.

Winter Weather

With the server weather conditions across Europe at the moment, it is vital that your child comes to school in the correct appropriate clothing.  ie, jackets, jumpers, hats, gloves, scarves, warm socks and footwear. Outside winter clothing is to be left in the foyer area when your child arrives into school. We ask that all students wear their school jumper whilst within the school building, not just their school polo shirt.

If the weather conditions are too cold outside, students will remain inside the school building during break-time and lunch-times. This will be under the discretion of management. We thank you in advance in this manner.

Primary School PE Lessons

This term, Primary School PE lessons will be as follows:
Years 3-6 will commence ‘Ice-Skating’.  We kindly ask the students to bring their skates, helmets and appropriate winter clothing.

Years N-2 will commence their unit of work with ‘Gymnastics’ in the Gymnastics Hall with professional Gymnasts.  Short/leggings, T-Shirts are required.

Physical Education – appropriate dress

We also ask parents to fit all students appropriately for the Physical Education lessons. This requires a separate set of sport clothes to be available for the lesson. Students should change their ordinary dress for sport one prior to PE lesson commencement and change dress back to ordinary upon completion of the PE lesson. The school rule does not allow the student to participate at the PE lesson wearing normal dress.

Students without a separate set of clothes for PE lessons will not be allowed to participate and will be considered as absence. We kindly ask you to respect this guideline.

EISB School Fees / Term II.

Dear parents, as we commence 2017, we would like to remind parents who pay school fees on either a monthly or termly basis that the due date is Sunday, 15 January 2017.

We kindly ask you to settle any of your overdue amounts. EISB admission office will be sending out your individual payments calendar and payments summary shortly to make it easy for you to control and check the due, already paid or overdue amounts. We highly appreciate your attention on this matter and thank you in advance to those who have already made their payments.

MYP Art Exhibition

Dear friends, parents, teachers, we would like to invite you all to MYP Art Exhibition on Thursday, 26 January from 4 p.m. in the MYP Building. We will present the fruits of 5 months long journey of explorations and discoveries we have made in the World of Photography. We are looking to see you there.

Yours MYP students

Improvements, refurbishments and repairs

As part of our commitment in making EISB school a great place for your children to learn, we have made certain improvements in our school outside environment, the canteen space, MYP space, music and art room, Nursery and Reception area as well as the corridors and entrance halls.

We will continue making further improvements in the course of the coming weeks with respect to lightning in the classrooms, hygiene and sanitary standards and other aspects of the quality of the school inner and outside environment. We kindly ask you to respect certain limitations that affect our school due to construction of the Soccer Arena in the neighborhood.

School Canteen Euphoria Chip Card system introduction

The EISB partner catering provider 'Euphoria' will improve its booking system. In the course of January 2017, the students will be gradually (year by year/class by class) provided with a personalised chip card. The card will be primarily used when getting the lunch in the canteen rather than asking each child "What is your preference for today?".

Once the payment of the invoice for the period (December/January/February) is made, the chip will be "online" – with positive credit. The ordering system and the cancellation system with a note to office@euphoriadaily.sk remains in place. Remember 8.00 a.m. is the deadline for cancellation of the food delivery for the particular day.

Chip cards will be stored at the School Euphoria Canteen at a convenient place, sorted by classes in pick-up boxes. The student will pick up the chip card, get the lunch upon presentation of it at the "chip card reader" and return it back to the pick-up box. The students do not have to carry the chip card in the course of the day and thus we avoid loss of the cards.

We are sure this will facilitate a smooth and faster lunch delivery as we are a growing school. Any questions with respect to the system, please direct to office@euphoriadaily.sk.

Absence

Please be sure to inform the school office via email office@eisbratislava.com if your child will be absent from school for any reason.

Issues of Grievance

I would like to remind you and bring to your attention again the EISB Policy/Structure on dealing with unforeseen issues of grievance.  It is of high importance, that all parents follow this protocol to enable consistency and proper communication.  Remember, every issue, no matter how big or small can be solved effectively.  Your class teacher or MYP Form Tutor remains the first point of contact within the school.

Please Note:

We would like to draw your attention that our Head of School, Mr. Colin McDonnell has had to stay in Australia for some time due to a family health issue.  He will continue to work as per normal, only externally whilst he is with his family back in Australia.

On behalf of the EIS Bratislava Team, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all and may 2017 be an environment where all our learners are happy, learning, co-operating and being global active learners.
