Healthy Hearts

Welcome to week 2 of 52 Healthy Habits! This week we are going to continue waking up daily and drinking a glass of water and we are going to talk about getting your heart rate up for a sustained period every day.

Raising your heart rate isn't as hard as you think. Just going for a brisk 15-20 minute walk will raise your heart rate and get the blood flowing through your heart and to your muscles, making your heart stronger, and delivering more nutrients and oxygen to your organs.

If you can't walk or don't like walking, you can do aerobics, resistance training, & yoga are all great ways to increase your heart rate. For example, this morning I was practicing my back bends during yoga and when I got upside down into wheel pose, my heart rate rose up to 130 BPM! You don't need a heart rate monitor to tell if you heart rate is elevated either. You can normally feel when your heart rate is up, sometimes by breathing heavier or just feeling more blood pumping through your body. Getting your heart rate up will give you a boost of energy too.

So however you like, make sure you get your heart rate up at least once a day and try and keep it up for a sustained period. Start out with 5 minutes if you are normally sedentary and don't live an active life. Then the following week add another 5 minutes to it.

Stay tuned for some other fun ways to get your heart rate up this week that I will share on Facebook!
