WE WELCOME BACK THE US$50 UNI-VISA FOR ZIMBABWE AND ZAMBIA!
Here's some good news for visitors to Zimbabwe and Zambia (especially those visiting the Victoria Falls area)!

After a delay of about a year, the two countries have at last re-introduced the popular, and much-awaited KAZA (Kavango-Zambezi) “Uni-Visa”, which allows visitors a stay of up to 30 days in either (or both) countries for a single payment of US$50.

The visa was re-launched by Zimbabwean Home Affairs Minister Ignatious Chombo and his Zambian counterpart in a ceremony in Livingstone, Zambia on 21st December 2016.

The KAZA Uni-Visa is available to citizens from 40 different countries.  It saves time and money and enables much easier travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia (e.g. at Victoria Falls/Livingstone). It also covers people who want to enter Botswana for day-trips through the Kazangula border.

The Uni-Visa is currently available only at Harare, Victoria Falls, Lusaka and Livingstone International airports, the Victoria Falls land border (Zimbabwe/Zambia) and the Kazungula land border (Zimbabwe/Zambia/Botswana).

For more info, including a list of the eligible countries, see KAZA Uni-Visa re-introduced by Zimbabwe and Zambia

ARE YOU COVERED FOR MEDICAL RESCUE FROM REMOTE AREAS?
If your holiday plans involve travel to some of the very remote areas of the Zambezi Valley, it is wise to check whether your international travel insurance covers the costs of a medical evacuation from these areas in case of emergency.   You would be surprised how often it doesn't.

A remote illness or injury  far from home could result in a medical air evacuation costing over $100,000 depending on the severity of the situation and the location.

ACE Air and Ambulance, together with HAC (Halsted's Aviation) provide a professional, state of the art medical rescue service which will carry out emergency evacuations, even from Zimbabwe's wildest areas.

They strongly recommend that  visitors going on safari protect themselves with appropriate insurance.  This can be done via a short-term (7, 14 or 30-day) membership subscription through their alliance with the international provider "Global Rescue".   Other options can cover trip lengths of 90, 180, and even a full 365 days.

These subscriptions can either be for Individuals or for Families (covering the individual, their spouse/partner and up to four dependent children under age 18 (or under age 23 if full-time students).

A Medical Only Membership covers: field rescue, medical advice from Johns Hopkins Medicine, 24/7 emergency support from experienced critical-care paramedics, evacuation
aboard medically equipped private aircraft or with medical crews aboard commercial flights, and repatriation of mortal remains.

Medical and Security Membership, in addition to the medical services listed above, covers extraction services for security and non-medical emergencies, in the event of war, natural disaster, civil unrest, terrorism, or other situations that could cause imminent grievous bodily harm.

You can join up to Global Rescue through ACE Air and Ambulance.

KARIBA
ZAMBEZI CRUISE SAFARIS BASES OUT OF MASUMU RIVER LODGE AT BINGA
Lake Kariba's largest cruise company, Zambezi Cruise Safaris has incorporated the lovely hilltop Masumu River Lodge near Binga into its all-inclusive cruising itineraries.

Masumu River Lodge is the base from where visitors can wait in comfort for their Zambezi Cruise Safaris departure or transfer post-cruise.  The hilltop setting of this attractive stone-under-thatch lodge has breath-taking, panoramic lake views and spacious, open-plan public areas with a swimming pool and lush tropical gardens. Those wishing to stay overnight can enjoy comfortable en-suite rooms with stunning lake views.  Optional activities include cultural village tours , fishing and sunset cruises.

Zambezi Cruise Safaris offer set-date 2-3-night cruises linking Binga with Kariba (or vice versa), covering a distance of some 270 kms along the length of Lake Kariba, with associated road or air transfers as required.

Visitors staying at Victoria Falls can also enjoy a short Lake Kariba cruising experience with a 2-night cruise out of Binga at the western end of Lake Kariba to the Sengwe River and back (see map).

The incorporation of Masumu River Lodge into the Lake Kariba cruising experience is a welcome and convenient addition for visitors.  It is also hoped that this will provide a much-needed boost to local tourism and culture for the people of Binga, whose remote location has resulted in their isolation and neglect for many years.

In addition to its set travel dates and cruise itineraries, Zambezi Cruise Safaris also offer ‘Full Charter’ options for private groups, conferences, weddings and functions using their fleet of luxury, cruiseboats.  These include
Umbohza (up to 28 pax);
Shikra ( up to 30 pax) and
Karabezi (up to 14 pax).

MARINELAND HARBOUR - KEEPING KARIBA SMILING

Tourism to Zimbabwe's best-kept secret, Lake Kariba, is facing many challenges largely due to the state of Zimbabwe's economy and the lack of easy access.  While visitors are flocking to Victoria Falls (especially now that the new international airport is open to wide-bodied aircraft), Kariba is so often neglected as a tourism destination.

And yet, a boat-cruise safari and fishing holiday on one of the many "houseboats" which ply the waters of the vast inland sea of Lake Kariba, visiting the creeks and bays of the Matusadona National Park, is truly one of the most relaxing and enjoyable experiences  - especially for families and groups.

Marineland is Kariba's largest harbour facility and the starting point for many boat cruises and cross-lake transfers to the more remote safari camps and lodges along the lakeshore.  The hard-working staff and management of this efficient marina keep the place ship-shape every day of the year and are never without a smile!   Apart from maintaining a harbour full of boats of all sizes in tip-top working order, they run an efficient cross-lake transfer service, a large houseboat and cruise chartering agency, supply drinks, ice, catering and supplies for all boat charters, supply gas and fuel to boating and other industries, keep a well-stocked shop for last-minute purchases, and keep everyone informed with extremely informative monthly newsletters!

Please take note of the following extracts from the Marineland December 2016 news:-

Lake levels:
"We ask all potential lake users not to be put off visiting Kariba because of authority announcements of a 16% capacity lake level. This misleading figure is the percentage of water available for hydro-electricity-generating capacity only. This is not the lake level or overall percentage of water in the lake. This figure is difficult to obtain but is believed to be over 75%. Lake Kariba is still a large body of water covering some 4,582 square Km....."

The management at Marineland also keeps meticulous records of the changing water levels of Lake Kariba throughout the years. Interestingly, their statistics show that in early December 2016 the lake level was .19 m (only 19cm) lower than at the same date last year.  With the rainy season now in full swing, it is to be hoped that the lake level will soon start to rise with inflows from the Zambezi's upper catchment area.

National Parks Fees:  All visitors to Kariba who are about to embark on a trip on the lake, are required to pay usage fees to Zimbabwe National Parks.  Marineland have usefully informed us that these have not changed for 2017 (yet) and that National Parks now have a facility which will accept payments by local swipe cards.  However, it is still advisable for regional and international visitors to pay in cash.

CRUISING SAFARI HOLIDAYS ON LAKE KARIBA

A cruising holiday aboard one of the many-sized "houseboats" on Lake Kariba is a fantastic way to combine a safari with a water-based experience (fishing, boating etc).  Boats depart from the main harbours at the eastern (Kariba Town) end of the lake or from Binga, Mlibizi or Msuna at the western (Victoria Falls) end.   The Matusadona National Park on the southern shore of the lake, which is separated from Kariba Town across some 30 kms of water, is the most popular destination for cruising because it is free of human settlement and has wonderful wildlife and birdlife which you can enjoy from the comfort of your boat.   There is also spectacular scenery up various river estuaries along the lake and at the western end where the Zambezi River runs through a spectacular gorge before joining the wider lake .

HERE'S WHO TO CONTACT:-
Booking a cruising trip direct can be problematic unless you have local connections and know the ropes.  So the best way to plan your holiday is to use one of the very experienced and efficient houseboat chartering agencies and Lake Kariba specialists that are listed by WildZambezi.com.

These expert planners can help you organise a fantastic cruising holiday for small or large groups, family get-togethers or special occasions.  You can choose to self-cater or have your trip fully-catered, depending on your needs.  Almost all except the smallest boats have crew on board who will do all the cooking and cleaning.

ZAMBEZI VALLEY
LOOK!  NO FENCE AT TIGER SAFARIS!
The news from Tiger Safaris Fishing Camp on the Zambezi River near Chirundu, is that they have taken down their electric fence!
This is a big change for the camp, which is popular with families, fishing groups and wedding parties, as the fence had been there for years. However,  it was constantly being broken or damaged by the local elephants, and so it was decided to remove it altogether and let them roam freely.

While this provides for amazing, close, wildlife encounters, it also means, of course, that visitors need to be extremely vigilant when walking in the camp area both day and night and children should be kept under close supervision at all times.

Say the Tiger Safaris crew:  "Our big boy elephant decided one very hot afternoon in November to take a much needed nap by the swimming pool, he snored away for a good few hours and gave us lots of time to get some photos. We have had the elephants drinking out the pool—a first for us here and the hippos maintain their diligence by making sure the lawn is constantly trimmed every night."

The camp hosted its annual All Species Fishing Competition in November and, compared to previous competitions, a good range of fish species were caught, including Tigerfish, Bottle Nose, Nkupi, Electric Barbel, Cornish Jack and Vundu.  One team were even lucky enough to have the fish jump into the boat!!.

This is a fun competition held annually, with the proceeds going to supporting an old age home.  The weather was extremely hot, and this picture shows the teams cooling off for lunch on a shallow sandbank in the river!

New signpost position
Self-drivers should note that the Tiger Safaris signpost on the main Harare-Chirundu road has moved (pictured)!

Here are the instructions for getting to the camp:-
"Drive through Chirundu as if you were going to the Border Post Gates and you will see our sign situated on the right (as pictured). Turn right and follow the sign posts!"

THE LITTLE TREEHOUSE GEM AT JECHA
Jecha Point Fishing Lodge and Camp just a little further downstream from Chirundu than Tiger Safaris, has a wonderful location on the banks of the Zambezi River, and is a popular family destination for fishing, camping and informal, in-the-wild weddings.

At a short distance of 100 metres or so, just behind the camp, is a quiet little back-water channel of the Zambezi River which is a natural corridor for the wild animals in the area.   You can drive to it, or walk the short distance (be very cautious as there are no fences and elephant and buffalo frequently pass through), and once you get there, a delightful surprise awaits.

Perched right above the channel is a very large acacia tree where the owners of Jecha have built a robust wooden tree-house viewing platform. Climb up a steep set of stairs and onto the firm wooden decking with guard rails all around.  Here you are perfectly safe, perched high in the canopy of the tree with the most magnificent view over the channel, the main camp and the Zambezi River beyond.

It's worth spending a few hours sitting quietly up here with a pair of binoculars and a camera.  The birdlife is fantastic and every now and then animals wander through and past, completely oblivious of your presence.  We have watched elephant and buffalo herds, warthogs, bushbuck and a number of other species from this lovely place.

But what makes the treehouse even more special is that newly-married couples are offered the opportunity of spending their wedding night on the platform under a canopy of  stars!  The treehouse is decked with lights and a comfortable bridal bed and dining/breakfast table is prepared on the wooden deck.  There is even a discrete little bathroom under the stairs!   Obviously this type of experience will only appeal to adventurous spirits - but what a wonderful, wild and romantic idea!

BUSHLIFE SAFARIS UPGRADE "LITTLE VUNDU CAMP" IN MANA POOLS

Nick and Desiree Murray, owners of Bushlife Safaris report that during 2016  they rebuilt their intimate, semi-permanent tented camp "Little Vundu”.

Little Vundu is located on the Zambezi River 3kms upstream from its larger parent, Vundu Camp.  It is available for exclusive use, offering a more adventurous, privately-guided option for small groups.

"It is an amazing  spot in Mana Pools. We moved the tents onto the area between the channel and the river on the dining room side. The tents are are large and airy with ensuite running water for the bathrooms. We ran a few trips and everyone loved it."

The re-build includes new and spacious canvas tents (6m x 5m, each) all with twin beds, mosquito nets, fans, and an outside seating area.   Each has its own open-air, en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, basin and shower.

Wholesome and healthy meals are prepared by a private chef and served in an open air dining room, under a canvas of stars at night.

Filming wild dogs with the BBC
Bushlife Safaris also report that in 2016 they completed 250 days of filming the wild dogs of Mana Pools with the BBC for a landmark production coming out in 2018.

"We have certainly learned a lot about what it takes to make a major feature documentary and also about the dogs which we have been  observing.  At this stage the working title of the series is "Dynasties" , but this may change.   Our section will be entitled "The Painted Wolves" and will be one hour of a 5-hour series which will include tigers, chimpanzees, penguins and lions."

Through their Bushlife Support Unit, they are also raising funds to put tracking collars on some of Mana's iconic elephants to try to give them extra protection.  Funding for this is required and any support would be much appreciated.

TAIL ENDER....
Goodbye 2016!    Happy travels in the wild in 2017!

Thank you to the folks at Jecha Point Fishing Lodge & Camp, near Chirundu for this lovely photograph of three beautiful, jewel-like Southern Carmine Bee-Eaters. These are annual summer migrants who arrive in the Zambezi area from the Equatorial savannas of central Africa in  August-September each year.  If you visit then, you can enjoy the wonderful spectacle of hundreds of them flocking near their nesting holes  which are burrowed deep into the steep sides of sandbanks along the river.   By March (or sometimes even earlier) they have flown back to their winter homes.
