Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Family,

The Expeditions Team is thrilled to start the new year by returning to Everest. During Round 1, students engaged in the course change process, built relationships with students from all grades in their classes, got to know their teachers and got an overview of their subject matter.  During our second round at Everest, many students are taking the skills and theory they’ve learned and applying them to tangible products.  The Journalism class’ articles are live at summitpsnews.org, the Entrepreneurship class is competing for the widest profit margin with pop-up shops this Friday, and the Sociology of Law class is solving real-world problems from the San Jose Juvenile Justice Commission.

We believe that one of the most important tenets of real expeditionary learning is seeing one’s work make an impact on a real problem or issue in the community.  This starts in the Expeditions classroom, but where it truly comes alive is when students choose an internship or independent study shaped around their particular talents and interests or the needs of local businesses or organizations.  For example, we’ve had students design web apps to help high schoolers learn about internship opportunities, work in research labs and hospitals, improve business operations for a family business and intern at city hall.  These experiences help them confirm their career interests and give a great talking point on college applications.

We are especially proud of our 35 internship and independent study students at Everest this year, and hope to expand the number of students who take advantage of this unique option in 2017-2018 by starting the placement process much earlier.  Juniors are doing career maps in College Readiness this week, and will have a special info session on internship and independent study come to their classes.  But it’s not just juniors who should apply-- any Everest student who has an idea for an internship or independent study is eligible.  We have multiple Expeditions staff members and teachers who want to help your student refine their idea and do the research and outreach necessary to make it come to life.  When Expeditions returns to Everest in mid-March, this process will be in full swing-- so I encourage you to make time for a conversation with your child this week, to see what they’ve liked most about their Expeditions this year and help them decide whether an internship or independent study might be the right fit for next year.

We hope you’re hearing positive feedback from your students about their Expeditions and that this next week is inspiring and fun.  As always, I would love to hear your feedback, via email, phone or a visit to the school.  If you would like to be involved with the Expeditions program, either by chaperoning future field trips, visiting classes or attending events, please reach out! I would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Lucretia Witte

Happy New Year from the EPO

College Education Night - Thursday, January 19th

Dear Parents,

On Thursday, January 19th at 6:30 pm, Everest and Summit Prep will have a college night at the Everest  location. We will have a session on college testing and financial aid that is especially relevant for junior families, but all families are welcome to attend. We will explain more about the standardized tests that students take in 11th grade in preparation for college, such as the SAT and ACT. We will also have an expert from a local college present about financial aid and the process of applying for it.

For seniors, we will hold a separate workshop at the same time on applying for college scholarships. Senior parents are welcome to attend, but we especially want students to attend so that they can work on scholarship applications with the support of teachers and mentors.

We hope you can join us!

Everest Community Night: Celebrate Our Diverse Community
We hope that you will put this event on your calendar (February 2, 2017 at 7pm) and join us!

Students, teachers, and families are all encouraged to participate in any or all of the three aspects of our Community Night celebrating the diversity of Everest:

1) Sharing - From clubs, to passions, to different religions and heritages -- we'll have tables set up all along the halls of Everest where you can share your diversity with everyone.
2) Performances - Have something to perform? Please let us know if you would like to sing, dance, give a speech, etc....we want to celebrate everybody and can't wait to see you on the stage! (email: lindamburt@gmail.com)
3) Food - Hungry? An event like this would not be complete without food and drinks that represent all our various cultures. Bring your favorite dish to share.

“Diversity” is a concept that is emphasized in the first few words of Everest’s mission. This event is a way for us to bring together students, families, and faculty to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. Each member of our community brings their own identity to our school, including things that we have in common and things that make us unique. Both aspects - our similarities and our differences - are worth recognizing and celebrating.

Please save the date - Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 7-8:30pm.

FUNdraiser Dinner - MONDAY, JANUARY 23RD
Please mark your calendar and join us for another fun dinner on Monday, January 23rd at the Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown Redwood City.

Everest will earn money for every dollar you spend at the restaurant! See you there!
