Our focus this year will be on the Cobra Ka Multiband and X/Ka Triband Maritime satellite terminals which are being deployed by Australian Government and Defence agencies to access both the Inmarsat GX and WGS satellite constellations - see follow on stories for additional infomation.

A new video on our Cobra terminals can be viewed by accessing the link below:

Supporting Australia's Defence Forces & Border Protection

Over the past year EM Solutions has been delivering its Cobra Ka Multi band terminals for deployment on Cape Class Vessels operated by the the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection under contract with Inmarsat Global Government.

Following on in early 2017 the Australian Navy will deploy our  Cobra Ka Tri band (X/Ka) terminals on identical vessels following the successful sea trials of this terminal in 2016.

A paper by Rowan Gilmore describing the trials and published in the October 2016 edition of Milsat Magazine (SatNews Publishers) is  available here:

Robust Satellite Tracking on the Move

The EM Solutions Cobra (Maritime) and Taipan (Land) Satellite-on-the-Move Terminals both use proprietary tracking technology, based on Monopulse techniques, that is able to deliver superior performance over and above other systems.

While most ground terminals track acceptably under benign conditions, tracking the satellite can still remain problematic at higher frequency bands (when the beam is more directional), at higher relative velocities or turbulence, or in obstructed environments. The true test of tracking ability comes in rough terrain, tight turns, or when passing near obstructions.

If you are interested in learning more about how this technology performs in a real life case study, we have prepared the following paper based on testing that was carried out on our 45cm X-Band Taipan Land Terminal which has been developed in partnership with a Tier 1 European System Integrator.

This paper has been published in the March 2017 edition of MilSat Magazine (SatNews Publishers):
EM Solutions and EM Clarity partner to deliver innovative technology to the US Department of Defence

Ultra high-speed communications on the move

When you combine the best of technology from EM Solutions and our sister company EM Clarity some amazing outcomes our possible.

In the coming months EM Clarity's E-Band, 10Gbps radios operating on EM Solutions gimbal tracking system will be demonstrating the future of on-the-move "fibre speed" radio communications for:

  • Ship to shore or ship to ship
  • Ship to air
  • Vehicle to vehicle
This technology has extensive applications in both defence and commercial markets and has initially been productised for application trials in the USA.

Fibre Speed from Mobile Radio Technology
Erin Oliver, UQ Microwave Research Engineer, joins the team

From January 2017, under a collaborative PhD program at the University of Queensland, Erin Oliver has joined EM Solutions as a microwave research engineer. Erin will work with Dr. Yifan Wang and other colleagues to develop a flat-panel reconfigurable antenna for Ka-band satellite communications. Prior to her PhD program, Erin completed a Bachelor and Master of Engineering at the University of Queensland. During this time she completed an internship at CSIRO looking into the impact of high penetrations of renewable energy in electricity distribution networks. She then went on to work on a variety of collaborative projects as a research assistant within CSIRO's Energy group. She left CSIRO to undertake her master's thesis on virtual synchronous machines as part of a research placement at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. Her attentions have recently turned to antennas and she is thrilled to be working with EM Solutions on this exciting project.

Local Award a Heartfelt Honour

As a small business in a niche market, we were extremely honoured to be recognised on our own turf by the Brisbane Lord Mayor, Councillor Graham Quirk at his Business Awards dinner.  The official award we won was "the Brisbane Times Award category for Business Innovation".

What makes this award particularly special to us is that, although our manufacturing plant and offices are based in Brisbane, the majority of our customers are outside the Brisbane region and our area of work is so specialised that our innovations and technical expertise fall off the radar of our local communities
.  As well, our multicultural staff are all local residents and it is their talents, by and large, that ultimately make us successful at what we do and so this award really acknowledges that the hard work they are doing.

We sent (pictured from left) Operations Director Yiorgos Makris, Chief Engineer Peter Bradley and Chief Technology Officer John Ness along to the Awards night with Program Manager John Logan (not pictured) arriving a little bit later in the evening.  A good time was had by all.
