Kerri Saxby from Shooting Star, reports on November's meeting...

At the first meeting of 2017, Chairman Amy Codd welcomed new and established club members and kicked off proceedings by reflecting on the group's successes since December’s meeting.

Amy congratulated those club members recognised during the Newark Business Awards and thanked Emma, Lesley, Kerri and Malcolm for decorating the club's Christmas tree in the Parish church

Is it high time to grasp the Nettl?

Lesley Pashley and Jamie Hogue took to the stage to deliver the first sponsored presentation of the year. The pair, from Nettl of Newark and Redlime, engaged club members by asking them to think about marketing.

During a self-assessment activity, Lesley and Jamie asked how well people felt their brand identity was reflected by their logo, printed materials and website. The pair offered to help if people needed support to strengthen their marketing in 2017.

Join in the Action

James Fountain, Chair of the Action Group gave some encouraging feedback following the Rail Summit which took place on Friday 9th December. Six rail companies, including Network Rail, Virgin and East Midlands Trains, were represented during the summit, which was organised by Newark Business Club.

James reported that he felt the club's concerns and proposals were listened to and that further investigation in particular the level crossing would be actioned by the rail companies.

Flair for Retail

Amy Codd updated the club in Elaine Ellis' absence. She invited club members interested in supporting the Retail Group or those from retail businesses to attend the next meeting, which is due to take place at The Barge on Wednesday 18th January at 5:45pm.

Building for Success

David Lloyd from Newark Town Council gave the final presentation of the morning, which was a positive look at what the Town Council has been able to achieve in recent years and where it hopes to develop next.

David enthused about how Newark’s Christmas lights received rave reviews, especially on social media and that the lights in the Market Place are officially the largest free-standing canopy in Europe!

As well as continuing to support the many events which take place in and around the town, and attract local people and tourists, the council are hoping to increase opportunities to host events in community venues, such as the castle, the riverside and market place.

David urged businesses to get involved in plans to continue to develop the town, as a business centre, a community and a wonderful place to visit.

Newark - Building on Success

David Lloyd,  Leader of Newark Town Council (NTC) gave members a positive and insightful presentation into plans for the future.

David, explained that NTC remit had developed to include parks and the marketplace. In addition a Newark Plan was being developed for the next 10-20 years.

The consensus was that the Christmas lights and market had been a great success and the plan was to run more next year with a festive market every week for 4 weeks running up to Christmas. Free parking during the festive period (a key business club iniative), would also be repeated in 2017.

Coach parties were being encouraged with flexible drop off and free parking at the lorry park in order to further develop the visitor economy.

Alongside this, a 'Whats on Guide' has been developed with a broad circulation to highlight the wide range of events held in and around the town, again to attract more visitors.

Capital bids were being investigated to enable more maps and finger posts and a review was being conducted on the prolification of 'A' boards and banners around the town.

Festivals had been very popular, music and cultural.  There were plans to repeat the very successful civil war reenactment held in May. It was also very positive to learn that Newark in Bloom had been awarded a Silver Gilt for its display.

An audit has been conducted on litter bins and 200 new ones are planned, whilst a pilot litter sweeper is being engaged with support from NSDC.

And finally the concept of a business improvement district (BID) is being explored.

Work has resumed on Eton Avenue, Queens Road, Harrison’s Way, Quibell’s Lane and Crankley Point on the 3rd of January 2017 and the contractors are now preparing for the first major road closure at Sleaford Road.

From Monday the 9th of January, Sleaford Road will be closed to through traffic at the Junction of Lawrence Street. This closure is expected to remain in place until March at which point we will reopen Sleaford Road and close Beacon Hill Road.

Below is a plan of the Sleaford and Beacon Hill Road closure dates. The contractors are rotating the closures for reasons of public convenience and safety.

Nottingham Business Engagement Group
Nottinghamshire County Council is conducting a survey into new ways of working with the aim of working smarter in order to address a budget gap of nearly £55m over the next three years as a result of reductions in Government funding and a rising demand for many of its services.

This gap in their finances comes on top of successive years of budget reductions so achieving savings will become increasingly challenging. In order to address this challenge, the Council is working on a number of approaches.

Members can comment on their proposals/approaches by completing the suvey  by
