EARLY BIRDS AND WORMS

If You Want to Pre-Order PIX, Today's the Day!

"Hey," you're thinking, "don't these emails usually show up on the first of the month? What gives?"

First, you're right. Second, what gives is today, January 30th, is what's called "Final Order Cutoff" for PIX, Vol. 1: ONE WEIRDEST WEEKEND, which, as a refresher, is the new edition (with a new cover and bonus pages) of the book I self-published in 2014. Final Order Cutoff is, particularly in the comic book retail market, stores' last chances to lock in their initial orders for a specific book or issue. So, today's that' day for PIX, Vol. 1. Those numbers go to the publisher and based on those numbers the publisher determines the print run for the book. The more pre-orders, the more books get printed, the lower the cost per unit, the easier it is to actually make a nickel or two.

If you already have a copy and are happy with it, I thank you and you can skip to the next section, otherwise…

…if you don't have a copy and have been thinking you want to get one...or you have a copy (and are still reading) but are a completist and want every edition... or if you had a copy but gave it away...whatever the reason might be, if you want a copy I'd say lock that order in today. And you can do that a variety of ways:

If you have a
local comic shop you like, give them a call and ask them to order a copy. If you tell them it's Diamond Item #DEC160764, that'll make it super-easy. Then, on February 22, you can go there and pick it up.

If you want a digital version, you can get it through
Comixology (also available 2/22).

If you're not a comic shop-type or don't have one near you...or would rather get a physical thing for money spent, you can order it from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or use Indiebound (to find a local bookseller to get it). But, books outside of the comic shops arrive a week later, on February 29.

PIX STUFF!

It's beginning to look a lot like crunch time over at Pix Production Central.

Final files for the new version of book one were turned in - after a lot of working and re-working the back cover design - on January 20th and are approved and good to go.

My finished files for book two, TOO SUPER FOR SCHOOL, are due on March 20th, meaning I have 48 days left to finish this book...oh my!

Lots of coloring (and design work) ahead for me in these next 48 days. For those interested, the coloring process goes as follows:

1. It starts with the inked page:
2. That inked page is "flatted", which means everything's filled with colors...these colors can be super random, but so long as they fill every space, they're useful for the next stage. I'll be honest; I pay someone to do this because...it saves me a ton of time (and people are much faster at it than I am).
If you're wondering where the lettering went, that's done in a different program (I color in Photoshop) and incorporated later (see step 5).

3. Once I have a flatted page, I make color selections. I start making choices - what color is the building and sidewalk or the clothes, what shades of green for grass and trees, etc. (think Bob Ross asking "What color is the sky in your world?").
4. After I've done that, I go and add shading and highlights and any effects (the faded lines showing Pix's landing in panel 1, for example) or extras (Cherry's freckles).
Is everyone sick of seeing this specific page yet?

5. And then there's some technical stuff to prepare pages for print (like incorporating the lettering), but I won't get into that because I have to get back to coloring!

So yeah, a lot of that in the next 48 days, so if I'm slow to respond to emails or phone calls, this will be why...for what that's worth.

STUFF SAID Stuff

I released a new episode in January...did you catch it? It's a nice two hour talk with cartoonist Chris Eliopoulos, and despite that two hours there's so much we never got to. That's what happens when a couple of blabbermouths start blabbin'!

Listen to it here or via iTunes.

And as always, all past episodes are available for your ears at stuffsaidshow.com.

OTHER MISCELLANEOUS BITS

PRESS
Here's an interview I did with Image Comics that originally appeared in Image+ Magazine #8.

PODCAST APPEARANCES
As I'm promoting PIX, I'm appearing on podcasts. You can hear me talk about PIX, taking it to Image Comics, and mushrooms on the "George and Tony Entertainment Show", here. I'm in the first 15 minutes or so and plan to have a longer chat with them in a couple of months. You can hear a very thorough, spoiler-y review of PIX: ONE WEIRDEST WEEKEND and an edited version of the "George and Tony Show" talk on "The Longbox Review" podcast, here.

POLITICS

If you listened to my talk with Chris Eliopoulos on Stuff Said you heard us talk about the danger of getting political in that in can split your audience, etc. At the risk of doing just that I'd like to go on the record with: I am very much anti-Nazi. If you're so counter to this position you want nothing to do with me or my work, please do hit the unsubscribe button at the bottom of this email. Please.

REVISED PIX TRAILER
Mentioned it last month and I'm leaving it here - the new Image-ified version of the PIX trailer's up on YouTube...feel free to share it wherever!
