TRAPPED ALONE WITH YOUR SALAD?
Has this ever happened to you? You are sitting at a table and the people on either side of you are deep in conversation. There you are, just you and your plate of salad.
We would love to tell you we have the perfect solution, but we don’t. It’s somewhat imperfect but it’s better than sitting through the whole meal trapped in the cone of silence.
Try this -- what have you got to lose?
- Make eye contact with a person two seats over. See if you can join their conversation. Nod and look engaged (We know, awkward, but…)
- If the decibel level at the table is OK, you can engage in that conversation
- If not, suggest to the one-on-one conversers that you switch seats so you can join your conversation. (Hey, nervy, but seriously do you want to be stuck with your salad?)
You might be able to avoid this whole situation by starting a conversation with the person next to you as soon as you sit down.
And, please make sure that you always rescue anyone in the cone of silence.
