LGBT HISTORY MONTH 2017 - EVENT LISTINGS ACROSS LANCASHIRE

What's On - LGBT History Month 2017

Lancashire's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History Month celebrations are returning for their 9th year in February 2017!

Each year, the National LGBT History Month campaign has a specific theme that it encourages us all to follow. This year, the theme is Law, Citizenship & PSHE. Additionally, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales. So, this year's theme is particularly apt and we have planned a broad range of events to reflect this!

This year's events include film screenings, specially commissioned plays, historical exhibitions, guest speakers, a conference specifically for LGB&T young people and much, much more! We are also particularly proud to announce that Preston has been chosen as a hub for the National Festival of LGBT History!

So with such a varied range of events and activities on offer, this is one LGBT History Month not to be missed!

SATURDAY 18TH & 25TH FEBRUARY
THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF LGBT HISTORY: FESTIVAL THEATRE - BURNLEY

PERFORMANCES AT 12pm & 2pm ON BOTH DATES
BURNLEY CENTRAL LIBRARY, GRIMSHAW STREET, BURNLEY, BB11 2BD

In the 1970s, Burnley was the UK's battleground for gay and lesbian rights, with two ground breaking public struggles at either end of the decade. To mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the National Festival of LGBT History and Arts Council England have commissioned two brilliant new plays to recreate this amazing forgotten history.

"The Burnley Buggers' Ball", by award-winning playwright Stephen M. Hornby, speaks of a transformative political meeting held at Burnley Central Library which gave birth to the modern gay rights movement.

"Burnley's Lesbian Liberator", by Abi Hynes, dramatises the political activism of a bus driver sacked for nothing more than wearing a Lesbian Liberation badge. She fought back and started a battle won decades later.

Be prepared to take sides and get involved in these two immersive dramas!

Tickets for these performances are FREE (first come, first served)
