Major Netgear Router Security Vulnerability

If you're using one of the following Netgear Routers, you are likely subject to a MAJOR security vulnerability, unless you had fixed it in the last two weeks.

Further details are available at http://kb.netgear.com/000036386/CVE-2016-582384, but the bottom line is that if you have one of the following routers, you NEED to go to that Netgear web page and follow the link to download updated firmware for your router.  Note that this only applies to routers running stock Netgear firmware.  If you have modified your router to run DD-WRT, OpenWRT, or Tomato, then this does not apply to you.

SmartVox STRONGLY RECOMMENDS updating your router, as the result of the security vulnerability complete control over your network without ever having to set foot inside your building.  Among other things, this could compromise your SmartVox service and cause our security systems to lock you out, cutting off your phone service.

The router models affected are:
  • R6250
  • R6400
  • R6700
  • R6900
  • R7000
  • R7100LG
  • R7300DST
  • R7900
  • R8000
  • D6220
  • D6400
The D7000 was previously included in a list of models that were affected by this security vulnerability. However, NETGEAR has tested and confirmed that the D7000 is not affected by this command injection vulnerability.
