Readings for January 15

Matthew 5:38-42 Turn the other cheek, give your cloak as well, go the extra mile

These short verses from the Sermon on the Mount may be very familiar, but do we understand them? And do we do them? How might these verses describe creative resistance to oppression? What nonviolent, creative resistance tactics have you seen or practiced?

'Holy Experiment' that revolves around shared resources named UCC Church of the Month
This article on ucc.org tells about Land of the Sky UCC in Asheville, NC, a new church start that practices love, emphasizes shared leadership, shared resources and the belief that gifts should be given first. Land of the Sky is being celebrated for its ability 'to share earthly and spiritual resources' as the winner of the UCC Be the Church of the Month Contest. Click the link to read the whole story of their "holy experiment."

Sermon Follow-Up
As a follow-up to Pastor Meighan's January 8 sermon, here's a link to some articles from the Jan 2017 issue of Sojourners that offer some further perspectives on justice and the incoming administration.

WANTED!  Substitute Sunday School Teacher!
We would like to continue to offer Sunday School the 2nd Sunday of the month but our usual "Godly Play Storytellers" have travel plans next month.  Would you be willing to be a Storyteller (or teach a Sunday School lesson of your choice) Sunday February 12? Calvin and Henry Cataldo enjoy coming monthly and we do get occasional visiting families who check our web site. Please help us be a welcoming church to young families and talk to Cora Trujillo (trujcs1@gmail.com, 206-330-4201) or Judy Hooper (wphwac@aol.com or 206-325-2851) if interested.

An updated church directory will be published in early February. The password-protected online directory is updated as changes occur; if you need the password, please contact the church office.

New Copier!
We have upgraded to a newer copier, which was installed Friday, December 30. It should be very similar to operate to the old copier, but please contact Karen in the office if you would like training or need the updated print driver.

Preschool needs winter clothing for girls and boys, age 3-6, and unisex, preschool-size backpacks. Thank you! If you need more information, please call 206-324-5230 or email pepseattle@gmail.com.

Thank you from 350 Seattle
Dan Solomon, JLP Intern for 350 Seattle, writes:

Dear Pastor Meighan and all Prospect Church,
A huge THANK YOU for your donation of $200 to 350 Seattle. Your donation makes it possible for us to hold bold actions like Break Free PNW. It also supports the speaking events, meetings with elected officials, art builds, and infrastructure we need to grow the climate movement. Many thanks for your donation.

You have allowed us into your place of worship and given us every courtesy. Thank you for your support as we share this space to grow and further fight the good fight, for climate justice and for a sustainable future. Thanks!

The full card will be posted on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

Flûtes-en-Bois returns to Prospect for another afternoon of beautiful music. Directed by Janet See, Flûtes-en-Bois is a truly unique ensemble, and possibly the only of its kind in this country. The ensemble was established in 2010 as a result of a large and enthusiastic gathering of local baroque flutists at the renowned Baroque Flute Workshop, held each summer at Seattle Pacific University. The flutists perform on wooden, one-keyed baroque flutes, which is the type of instrument for which all 18th-century flute music was written. The sound is particularly sweet, warm, and expressive.

Flûtes-en-Bois members: Terry Barnett, Charles Cooper, Liz Hunter, Sarah Pyle, Miguel Rodé, Marty Ronish, Molly Warner; Lee Inman (Viola da Gamba), Mary Ann Hagan (harpsichord). Directed by Janet See

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Prayer Service
Sunday, January 22
2 p.m. (1:30 p.m. gathering)
Gethsemane Lutheran Church
911 Stewart St
Parking in “unreserved” spaces in the Aspira garage through driveway off Stewart Street.

This year’s theme is “Reconciliation – the love of Christ compels us.” Dr. Michael Reid Trice from STM will deliver the message.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated around the world between January 18 and 25. This year is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In this context, the Council of Churches in Germany created resources for 2017. They lift up two accents: a celebration of God’s love and grace, the “justification of humanity through grace alone,” reflecting the main concern of the churches marked by Martin Luther’s Reformation; and recognizing the pain of the subsequent deep divisions which afflicted the Church, openly name the guilt, and offer an opportunity to take steps toward reconciliation. The theme this year is based off of a quote from Pope Francis’ 2013 Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”) and 2 Corinthians 5:14 taken in the context of the entire fifth chapter.

Save the Date: Men’s Retreat
February 2-5, 2017
Pilgrim Firs
Gather for the 26th Annual PNC-UCC Men's Retreat at Pilgrim Firs. The program theme is "Finding the Wisdom We Need" with Program Leader, Rev. Mike Denton. Here are some words Mike uses to describe the theme:

There is a difference between being an elder and being older. Everyone can get older but an elder is chosen by a community to share the stories, wisdom, faith, love and hope that has been shared with them for the sake of the community. Past systems of eldership were dismantled by self-perpetuating systems based on privilege as opposed to the needs of the community. They were dismantled by systems of power that were threatened by the foresight and hindsight of wisdom. This retreat will be a discussion about how we might chose the elders we need and be open to being the elders our communities need.

The retreat is an opportunity to engage with other men in meaningful discussion, worship and song, and reflection on life’s transitions. The schedule allows for sharing as well as solitude. The Silent Retreat starts on Thursday after dinner. Weekend Retreat starts on Friday after dinner and concludes at 11am Sunday morning. Talk to Rick Russell for more information. Register here.

Save the Dates: Advocacy Days

Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day
Thursday, February 2
Homelessness has become more visible than ever in our community.  With rents and home prices sky rocketing, we need to advocate for affordable housing and an end to homelessness more loudly and boldly than ever before.  If you find yourself wondering what you can to do make your voice heard, there's an important way you can get involved: Register for Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day 2017! Join over 600 housing and homelessness advocates in Olympia for a day of training, rallying, and meeting with your lawmakers to tell them why you care about policies that increase access to affordable homes for everyone in Washington.  Last year, 4 members of Prospect attended and had a wonderful time learning from fellow housing advocates and talking to their lawmakers.  If you have any questions, please contact Abi Velasco at abiv@wliha.org. More info on Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day, including registration link.

Interfaith Advocacy Day
Thursday, February 9
United Churches of Olympia

This is a joint appointment by the Common Global Ministries Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.
