January UHNA Meeting

Join us at Red Brick Brewery on Monday, January 9th at 7PM for our first UHNA meeting of 2017.  Since McKittrick Simmons of Sweetwater Holdings (one of the partners in the Upper Westside mural building and the new loft offices on Defoor Hills) couldn't join us in November, he'll be there Monday to talk about their projects and vision for the Upper Westside and Underwood Hills.  We'll also talk about goals for the year ahead and give you all the chance to provide feedback on what you'd like to see from UHNA in the new year.

2017 Membership Drive

Underwood Hills membership runs on the calendar year, which means unless you renewed or joined in the last month, EVERYONE is due to renew for 2017.  Your voluntary annual dues of $30 for a family or $15 for an individual help fund our meetings, social events, communications and enable us to effectively advocate on behalf of the neighborhood when issues arise.  That's right, only $30 or $15 per year... you can't even buy one cup of decent coffee per month for that!  Membership is open to ALL residents of Underwood Hills, whether you own or rent.  Click the button below to join or renew today!

Christmas Tree Recycling

Weather permitting, Underwood Hills volunteers will pick up your Christmas tree on Saturday and bring it to one of the participating Bring One for the Chipper locations to recycle it.  All you need to do is send a $10 donation to UHNA via PayPal using the email address underwoodhillsatl@gmail.com, include your address, and have your tree out by the curb by 9am free of all decorations, tinsel, and other accoutrements.  The next Bulk Pickup is not until the end of the month, so let's get those trees off the street and away from the landfill!  We will use any seedlings or seed packets we receive in the park.

We also still need volunteers with trucks who are willing to pitch in an hour or so to help us out!  Please email Linley Branham if you can help.  We really need at least one more person to meet the demand, otherwise we will have to start turning folks away.

FINE PRINT: IF YOUR TREE DOES NOT FIT IN THE TRUCK OR IF IT IS NOT FREE OF DECORATIONS, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LEAVE IT AND REFUND YOUR MONEY.  IF WEATHER CONDITIONS DO NOT PERMIT ROAD TRAVEL ON SATURDAY, WE WILL RESCHEDULE IF POSSIBLE (AND IF THE EVENT IS RESCHEDULED OR OTHER RECYCLING OPTIONS ARE MADE AVAILABLE).  IF WE CANNOT RESCHEDULE, WE WILL ISSUE REFUNDS.

Speaking of recycling, don't forget we have a ton of useful information on trash, recycling and bulk pickup on our website!

Sponsoring the UHNA... good for business!

We are pleased to welcome back Moncrief Heating & Air Conditioning as a Gold Sponsor and Comfort Shield Heating & Air Conditioning as a Bronze Sponsor and to welcome The Sitter Tree as our new Silver Sponsor.  The Preschool at NDBC and Convivia Group each joined as Gold and Bronze Sponsors, respectively, at the end of 2016, and we are grateful for their commitment through 2017.  Florist Atlanta has been a long time supporter of UHNA through in kind sponsorship of flowers for various occasions and outreach to our neighbors.  Sponsorship is vital to fund the operations, advocacy, beautification, and other endeavors of UHNA to enhance the quality of life within Underwood Hills.

We are working with several of our sponsors from last year and have a few new sponsors you'll meet soon who are interested in joining our group of respected local businesses.  If you'd like to join them, please email us and visit our website for more information on how sponsoring Underwood Hills can benefit your business.  All of our sponsors can be found in the sidebar of this newsletter (or below the content if you're on mobile) and on the Business Directory on our website.

Keep reading for a little more information on each of our sponsors!

Welcome to our New and Renewing Sponsors

Gold Sponsor, Moncrief Heating & Air Conditioning, has been in business in Atlanta since 1898 and owned by the same family, some of whom are Underwood Hills neighbors (Amanda and Matt Wolski), since 1960.  They provide residential and commercial HVAC design, installation, service and repair.

Silver Sponsor, The Sitter Tree, is a local sitting community started in 2000 by one of our Berkeley Park neighbors, Jody Stephenson.  Local coordinators recruit, screen and manage sitters (for children, pets, and houses) so you don't have to!  Use "Underwood Hills" as your referral and register at thesittertree.com.

Bronze Sponsor, Comfort Shield Heating & Air Conditioning, is a local, full-service heating and air conditioning company that specializes in A/C and heating repair and A/C, furnace, and heat pump sales and service.  Underwood Hills neighbor, Ken Wallis, is the lead technician.

Bronze Sponsor, The Convivia Group, joined us late last year but never got a proper welcome.  The Convivia Group provides various commercial real estate services including brokerage, development, asset management, and research throughout the US and UK and is owned by UH neighbor and UHNA VP, Beau Grant.

Support the UH Park Teen Committee

The Underwood Hills Park Teen Committee has received a matching grant from Park Pride for $2400 to install exercise equipment for all to enjoy in our park!  In addition to the Park Pride grant, they've received a $500 grant from Disney and have almost hit their goal fundraising from neighborhood businesses and benefactors.  These are very competitive grants and we are so proud of Mia and Nora Epstein for this accomplishment that benefits our neighborhood and all who use our park.

For details on how you can buy a commemorative brick and literally make your mark on the park or make a tax deductible donation in any amount to complete their fundraising efforts, please visit our website.  Bricks will be ordered on February 1, so get those orders in!

Help Wanted

There are a lot of ways to get involved in UHNA, including serving on one of our Steering Committees.  We have two specific needs currently.
  • Someone to help with ad hoc website issues and updates (we operate on the WordPress platform).  We'd love a committed volunteer but would also consider an in-kind sponsorship for free or reduced rate services.
  • Someone to organize the Friday play group gatherings at the park when the weather warms up.  Macayla has graciously agreed to keep planning all of our awesome kid-centered (but adult friendly) events, but with her children being a bit older now, it's hard to make the Friday afternoons work.  This is a VERY easy and low-stress way to get involved... just pick the dates and maybe bring a snack (funds provided by UHNA Play Group dues) to share.
