The University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies is sponsoring Library Travel Research Grants for Spring & Summer 2017.
 
Their purpose is to enable faculty researchers from other U.S. colleges and universities to use the extensive resources of the Latin American and Caribbean Collection in the University of Florida Libraries, thereby enhancing its value as a national resource. The grants are funded by a Title VI National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
 
Seven or more travel grants of up to $1000 each will be made to cover travel and lodging expenses. Grantees are expected to remain in Gainesville for at least one week and, following their stay, submit a brief (2–3 pp.) report on how their work at UF Libraries enriched their research project and offer suggestions for possible improvements of the Latin American Collection.

TINKER SUMMER FIELD RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 2017

The purpose of this program is to make it possible for ANY graduate student (no matter what nationality) IN ANY FIELD to carry out exploratory and pre-dissertation field research in the Latin American/Caribbean region (except Puerto Rico and Belize) to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of social, politics, environmental and cultural issues; familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies; conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations; and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields.
  • These grants are NOT to be used for dissertation research.
  • Students awarded this grant will need to complete a Certificate in Latin American Studies by the end of their degree offered by CLAS http://www.ucis.pitt.edu/clas/lat_am_certificate
  • Grant recipients must spend at least four weeks in the field.
  • Field Research must take place between April-August
  • Students need to be registered as full-time students during the Fall 2017
  • Fellows will need to present a paper in the Tinker Workshop scheduled for November 2017

ARMED CONFLICT, PEACE PROCESSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF PEACEBUILDING IN COLOMBIA
 

Academic Summer at Universidad de los Andes (http://www.uniandes.edu.co/) in Colombia will be delivered by the Political Science department. The 3-week program will be run by Angelika Rettberg, Director of the Masters in Peacebuilding at Uniandes and will explore the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the challenges of the current peace process following the referendum result earlier this month.
 
The course combines lectures and seminars taught by leading academics from Uniandes with educational site visits. Students will meet with President Santos’ Communications team to discuss the influence of public opinion on the peace negotiations, visit the UN Development Project, the Center for Transitional Justice and the Colombian Congress. At the Reparation of Victims Unit, they will engage with people directly affected by the conflict, such as ex-paramilitaries and internal refugees, and during a walking tour of Bogota’s political Graffiti, they will see different representations of the parties involved in the conflict and the peace process.
 
The program is open to students from a range of arts, humanities and social science subjects, and is aimed particularly at those with an interest in conflict resolution and international relations in Latin America. It is arranged as a package that includes accommodation, and students will be housed as a group in supervised hotel accommodation close to the university campus. It includes a schedule of site visits and excursions as part of the academic provision, as well as a supplementary calendar of social activities

2017-2018 Inter-American Foundation Ph.D. Grassroots Development Fellowship

Master in Migration Studies at the University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco is taking applications for its Master in Migration Studies Program.

The second semester of the program takes place in Mexico City at la Universidad Iberoamericana
We will be able to place students in fieldwork and internships in many parts of the world, including on the US/Mexico border, the US/Guatemala border, along the route of "la bestia", and throughout Central America.

We are taking applications for next fall.The early deadline is February 1. The final deadline is April 1.  We will accept applications after that only if space permits

 New M.A. on Central America

Tulane University

The Stone Center for Latin American Studies announces an innovative new program on Central America to be offered at CIAPA (Centro de Investigación y Adiestramiento Político Administrativo) in Costa Rica (July 10, 2017-May 11, 2018). The intensive ten-month Latin American Studies M.A. program will provide students a unique opportunity to engage a range of global issues related to sustainable human development in democratic societies, including migration, health, environment, inequality, security, and violence prevention from a Central American perspective. The program is ideal for students pursuing careers in journalism, foundations, NGOs, multilateral organizations, and government, corporate, or humanitarian service, or who expect to pursue doctoral degrees.
 
The program combines graduate interdisciplinary seminars with practical applications that include in-country field experience led by Central American academics, policy makers, and civic actors who are engaged in the formation and critique of policy initiatives. The issue-oriented curriculum is designed to facilitate direct contacts with relevant Central American-based institutions and stakeholders.  Deadline for applications: March 15, 2017. 21th Latin American and Social Public Policy (LASPP) Conference

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh, welcomes everyone in the community to the 21th Latin American Social and Public Policy (LASPP) Conference. The conference will be held on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March18, 2017.

The LASPP conference is a student-organized event where undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty members can present their scholarly work involving social and public policy in Latin America. This year's presentations will be organized around,but not limited to, the following topics:

a) Public and Social Policy: Economics development, health, education, environment energy, gender, urban studies decentralization, LGBT, ethnic policies. 

b) Political systems and institutions: Democratic challenges, political economy, state building, public opinion, social-military relations, civil society, political parties and movements, political history, legislative studies, judicial studies, electoral systems, parties and party systems, comparative politics, ideology, subnational politics. 

c) Social, political and economic instability: Violence and crime, illegal economies, peace and conflict studies, conflict resolution, transitional justice, social movements. 

d) Arts, humanities, and cultural studies: linguistics, literature, media & film studies, cultural industry, musicology 

The LASPP Conference was first held in 1996 and has been held annually since then. It has been organized by the graduate students from the LASPP Graduate Certificate Program at CLAS at the University of Pittsburgh. We welcome all students, undergraduate and graduate, and faculty members who are enthusiastic about social and public policy in Latin America to submit paper proposals, panels, posters and participate in the conference. As every year, it is a great space for discussing the current issues in Latin America and gets to know more friends and colleagues interested in the region.

2017 Graduate Student Conference
The Individual, the People, and the State: Power in Latin America

Please note that the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Indiana University has extended the submission deadline for presentations at the 2017 Graduate Student Conference. Proposals will now be accepted until January 23rd, 2017. The 6th Annual Graduate Student Conference: "The Individual, the People, and the State: Power in Latin America” will take place between March 3rd and 4th, 2017, on the IU Bloomington campus and is open to students from all academic disciplines. We encourage the submission of abstracts which consider how power structures shape and are shaped by political, cultural, ecological, technological, or economic  entities within contemporary Latin American societies. III Congreso Inernacional Vallejo Siempre 2018
Salamanca, 25-28 Junio 2018


El año 2014 fue una fecha clave para los estudios sobre la obra de César Vallejo, ya que, después de algunas décadas, la ciudad de Lima recibió a los más destacados especialistas en la obra del poeta de Santiago de Chuco. En dicho encuentro se acordó convocar a los investigadores vallejianos, con periodicidad bienal y en distintos lugares, para seguir estudiando y repensando su obra, que constituye un legado mundial. Así, buena parte de esos especialistas se reunió en Montevideo (Uruguay) en 2016, debatiendo sobre temas y cuestiones que enriquecieron la comprensión de la obra del vatesantiaguino. El 2018, la Fundación Instituto Castellano y Leonés de la Lengua, la Academia Peruana de la Lengua y el Instituto de Estudios Vallejianos, filial Lima, convocan a la comunidad académica al III Congreso Internacional Vallejo Siempre 2018. Para este Congreso se proponen, como temas específicos, el estudio de la vida y obra de César Vallejo en España y Francia.

"Colombias globales" - XX Congreso de la Asociación de Colombianistas

La Junta Directiva de la Asociación de Colombianistas y la Universidad de San Diego invitan a investigadores, académicos, educadores y estudiantes de posgrado a presentar propuestas individuales y de mesa sobre el tema “Colombias globales”. Se plantean tres dimensiones del tema como sugerencias para orientar las propuestas: I. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los temas y aproximaciones más actuales acerca de las (re)configuraciones de lo colombiano en contextos internacionales y globales? Se trata de examinar lo colombiano—tal como se manifiesta en la producción cultural, las comunidades de colombianos radicados en el exterior, etc.—que se encuentra más allá del territorio nacional, desde los países vecinos hasta otros continentes. II. ¿Cómo se estudia Colombia en relación con otros contextos internacionales y al expandir las ópticas disciplinarias? Aquí se trata de estudios que se centren en realidades y fenómenos colombianos del contexto nacional, tanto históricos como actuales (y futuros)—el conflicto armado, articulaciones del periodo posconflicto, etc.—pero examinados mediante acercamientos comparados y/o perspectivas interdisciplinarias que abarquen aspectos extranacionales. III. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los elementos, influencias e instancias de lo extranjero en Colombia que necesiten más estudios académicos? Mientras que estas tres dimensiones sirven para señalar algunos enfoques generales, también se considerarán propuestas con distintos acercamientos y temas de estudio.

Annual Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Conference on Latin American and Iberian Studies 2017

The Department of Language and Literature at Lee University cordially invites submissions for the Annual Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Conference on Latin American and Iberian Studies on March 25, 2017.  
 
The conference focuses primarily on the languages, literatures and cultures of Latin America and Spain, but interdisciplinary submissions will also be accepted from related areas including Service Learning, Cross-Cultural Experiences, foreign language methodology, and others.
 
Please send a one-page abstract of approximately 250 words as an MS-Word document that clearly identifies the aim(s) of the paper, the rationale of the study, and finding (if applicable).  Since we recognize that not all papers will be completed by April, “works in progress” will be accepted. Send the proposal/abstract via email to asteffanell@leeuniversity.edu by February 28, 2017. Include your name, institutional affiliation, and email address as well as a brief biography and any kind of technology needed. All presentations will have a 10-12 minute limit. 
 
Abstracts and papers may be submitted in English, Portuguese, Spanish or French.  Since one of our goals is to bring undergraduate students and faculty together, papers co-authored by undergraduate students and faculty advisors will be considered. A $10 registration fee is required if you are presenting; this fee includes the cost of breakfast and lunch.
