Daventry Road Parade – Parking Issues
Roger has been informed by shop owners, on the Daventry Road Parade, that cars have been parking all day in the bays because there are no traffic wardens about.
Response from Dave Arnett, Service Supervisor, Parking Services Team:
We don’t have a rota system as such we just have areas where mobile patrols are carried out on mopeds, cars or foot patrols (when resource permits).

I have checked our records for the last 2 months and we have visited the Daventry Road on 16 occasions. We have observed 137 vehicles and issued 14 penalty charge notices to offending vehicles.

I will add this location to our daily briefing and request our Civil Enforcement Officers frequent the Daventry Road as often as possible to try and assist with the parking problems.

‘3 Trees’ Peace Trail - Cheylesmore
Thank you to all the residents and ex-ward councillor Kevin Foster for responding to our plea for more information of the location of the Cheylesmore Peace trees as featured in last week’s update. We now understand that the project for the whole city was completed in 2002/ 2003, when CV One was still in existence. It seems there was little consultation in regards to where the trees would be placed and there was a limited budget in regards to maintenance. As a consequence the vandalised information plaques were not replaced.
The three trees, Hazel, Maple & Holly,  are planted in a triangle to represent the 3 spires of Coventry that survived the blitz.

On contacting Coventry City Council, Roger received the following reply from Tim Wetherhill,Urban Forestry Officer:
The “Peace and Reconciliation Trail”, or 3 Trees Peace Trail was last assessed in 2005. Some of the trees had been vandalised and many of the signs had also unfortunately been damaged and removed. It was decided at that time to maintain the remaining trees only from that point. We have adopted them into the sites that they stand and will have them flagged as part of this trail in our new tree asset management system, as it develops and each site is inspected and updated.

Water Leak Outside Asda, Daventry Road
Roger has spoken to several residents about this water leak.

Here is the response received from Customer Care, Severn Trent Water:
Thank you for your call this morning concerning the above leak.

I’ve checked our records and can see that we’ve received several reports of the leak in question. On speaking with our scheduling team they’ve advised me that the repair has currently been planned in with the council for 8 February 2017. Due to the number of calls we’ve received, we’re currently speaking with the council to see if the repair work can be brought forward. Once we’ve received a reply from the council I’ll update you again.

Imagine our surprise when driving along Daventry Road on Saturday afternoon to be confronted by STW workmen completing their task. They said that it was a 4” mains collar that had to be repaired & that the area will be jet washed on Monday to complete the work.

Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association Meeting
The next meeting of WRNWA takes place on Wednesday 11th January at 7pm at Whitley Community Centre, The Avenue, Whitley.
Message from Lindsey Bailey, Chairman of the WR&NWA:
I once again ask for your continuing support with our collective efforts to make Whitley a better place to live for us, our children and our grand children.

To that end can I please ask that you do your best to attend the residents meeting next Wednesday where we will be sharing our draft plans to present a report and residents petition to both the City Council and our local elected representatives (from across the political spectrum) in support of the required actions we deem necessary (based on issues raised previously by you) to make both the access and egress routes within and approaching our estate either, by foot, bike or vehicle, a safer and less stressful experience than it is now or likely to be in the future, following the on-going and proposed developments both within and too the surrounding areas.

As we have stated many times before the more support we have from residents, the louder the message so if possible please attend and have your say.

Also, we will of course be providing updates on the new Tiverton School and reviewing progress on the Abbey Rd Jetty improvement scheme which has gathered considerable support since our last meeting.

Residents Parking Schemes
Last week, Roger and Pauline attended the full cabinet meeting at the Council House. One of the topics on the agenda was “Revision to Residents Parking Policy” which also included the review of the Cheylesmore parking scheme.

The reports set down the rules for future schemes and additions to existing schemes and included extra classes of permits for Carers Medical/ Pastoral and special permits. The meeting followed a scrutiny meeting that took place in November, where questions were raised by Roger and other councillors in regards to how existing systems worked.

The public report can be read here. From page 185 & dated March 2016, is the Cheylesmore and Earlsdon review, followed by the Residents’ Parking Policy (Revised) January 2017.

Residents have asked for more streets to be included, a change of hours of operation and that additional signage be put in place warning motorists they are entering the scheme. Currently 7 petitions are outstanding & Roger hopes that these petitions will be heard at the 6th February cabinet meeting, as listed in our diary.

Coventry Millennium Tapestry at St James’ Church, Abbey Road, CV3 4BG

The Coventry Millennium Tapestry tells the history of Coventry from 1016 to 2016 in 20 intricately sewn panels. Correct Use of Gritting Salt
A conscientious local resident sent us this correspondence that she had with a Council Officer with respect to the correct use of gritting salt.

Dear Pete,

Thank you for your info on the amount of grit/salt needed per sq m. as set out in your email.
I thought you would be interested in the following:-

On the afternoon of Monday Jan 2nd, anticipating a cold night, I used approx 2 kgs to cover the footpath and bridge from Southport Close to the London Road which is a distance of about 200mx 1m.  I didn't measure it out, but it looked about what you would expect to see when the gritter has been out on the roads.

Imagine my horror when I went along the path at 2pm the next day to find the bridge covered in sand and we weren't even expecting a cold night!   Apparently it was put there at about midday.  I then spent time sweeping it up so that there was (more or less ) the recommended amount.  I collected 2 buckets full which I returned to the grit bin in Sedgemoor Road.

I will monitor when we are due to have freezing temperatures and whether the grit needs renewing and I am going to put a note on the lid of the grit bin giving the spreading amounts.

Response from Peter Ullah, Highways Operations Manager:
Thank you for the feedback.

Unfortunately it is a common misconception that you must have huge mounds of salt in order for it to work. During training we are told that when stood upright looking down at the road if the salt is easily visible it’s too much - you should almost have to crouch down to see it!

Our gritters have a special mechanical device that regulates the rate of spread, but I appreciate it is quite difficult when doing it by hand. A little bit extra is better than not enough, but you certainly don't need a thick covering.

Thanks for taking the time and effort:
a) to make the bridge/footpath safer for the local community
b) helping reduce wastage; that is incredibly thoughtful of you and much appreciated.

We are currently reviewing the information displayed on our website and it’s clear that 'how to use gritting salt correctly' should be included, but your idea of a good old fashioned note in the meantime is excellent!

Once again thank you for your feedback and commendable community spirit.
