In this issue:
Dear Parents & Families,

Hello and Happy New Year to you all!  I hope that you and your loved ones had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday season.  As we reflect on the successes and challenges from the fall, the start of a new year and semester offers each of us a fresh start and chance to put those lessons learned to good use.

This month is a great time for your students to reconnect with resources and services on campus, join a club, and learn about many of the opportunities that are available to them.  Some options include on-campus jobs, career fairs, spring break trips, and various engagement opportunities. Do not hesitate to encourage them to explore and learn more about positions that may help in their skill development, while also providing a community and connection to the university!

You can always direct your student to us in the Office of the Dean of Students for assistance.  We are here anytime for you and your student.  You can reach us by phone at (423) 425 – 2321 or you can contact me directly at utcparents@utc.edu

Take care,
Emelia Dunston
Associate Dean of Students
Each month, this section will feature links to recent articles we believe provide helpful tips and information on current issues related to college students and the collegiate experience.  If you come across any articles you think would be good to share with other UTC families, send us the links at utcparents@utc.edu.

2016 Highlights - The UTC Choruses

Following a successful fall concert of the Brahms Requiem with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, 2016 was a very busy year for the UTC Choruses.  They began with the release of their second and final CD featuring the choral music of Professor Emeritus Roland M. Carter.  Dr. Carter is an internationally known arranger of African American Spirituals and these commercially available CD’s are a collection of all his works for chorus.  The project was done in collaboration with Dr. Carter and our current Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Kevin Ford and the UTC Chamber Singers.

In May the Chamber Singers traveled to Ireland and Scotland for a concert tour where they were well received.  They performed concerts in the historic Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin and in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh for a near capacity crowd.  In between concerts the students were able to learn and experience both countries by touring museums and historic sites, some as old as 3000 BC.  They also learned a little about hurling on the grounds of Trinity College Dublin and step dancing near the University of Edinburgh along the way.

Professor Alison Allerton was welcomed to the UTC Music faculty and the Choral Activities staff in August.  Professor Allerton is completing her DMA at LSU this spring and has taken over as director of the UTC Women’s Chorale along with teaching choral music education courses.  She brings exciting new energy to the Choral Activities area and we look forward to her work with our students.  Not to be out done, our Professor Perry Ward performed his final conducting recital with the help of the UTC Men’s Chorus and the Women’s Chorale leading to the upcoming completion of his DMA from the University of Kentucky.

In October the Chattanooga Singers and Chamber Singers combined at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Chattanooga for a concert celebrating the feast day of the recently sainted Pope John Paul II.  The Marion concert was well received by the Chattanooga community.
South Campus POD Market -- Now Open!
The current South Campus Market has expanded into a larger space in the Stacy Town Center building. The convenience store has been transformed into a POD Market.

What is a POD Market?
The P.O.D. Market experience comes “fully loaded” with food and product offerings for every taste, all of which is founded in a store setting rich in materials and finishes.  This includes:
  • Grab n Go Sandwiches
  • Fresh Produce
  • F’real Milkshakes
  • Convenience items for your everyday needs
The store includes two exciting retail brands!  We have moved the Subway at Crossroads to the new store.  This location also features a We Proudly Serve Starbucks that offers the most popular coffee, espressos, frappuccino's and tea selections from the Starbucks menu in a convenient express location.  Mocs Bucks are accepted at all three locations. Hours of operation are posted online at UTCDining.com.
As we ring in the year, we each strive to improve ourselves. As parents, we encourage this urge for progress in our children as well. When it comes to the transition from student to professional that your child will be facing soon, one of the best actions s/he can take right now is developing a network at UTC and beyond in the business community. Meeting professionals and forming bonds with other students on their way towards a career launch will help your child explore potential career paths and develop relationships with influential people who may likely be her/his boss or colleague one day. Some great activities to suggest are job shadows, co-ops, informational interviews, or mentoring programs available through campus. To get the support needed to dive into some empowering programs we have established for networking, refer your child to the Decosimo Success Center if s/he is a business student or to the Career & Student Employment Center if s/he is at another college on campus. We are here to help. But if your new year’s resolution was to cut out coffee, you are on your own…

Study Abroad in Spain for Summer 2017

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures organizes a Summer Study Abroad program in Alcalá de Henares (Spain) every summer. Located 22 miles northeast of Madrid, Alcalá de Henares is UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Students go for a month (June, 9 credit hours) or two months (June & July, 15 credit hours). Courses embrace different aspects of language, culture and literature, and include diverse content like film, gastronomy, politics and sports.

Students interested can stop by the department office (Brock 208) to pick a brochure or, even better, contact Dr. José-Luis Gastañaga (jose-luis-gastanaga@utc.edu) to schedule a personal interview to discuss the benefits of a study abroad program and the details of our program in particular.
UTC 2017 Summer in Paris Program

In July 2016, the UTC College of Arts and Sciences took some very enthusiastic students on the first faculty-led study abroad program in Paris, France.   Students stayed at Cité Universitaire, an international dormitory, and took French classes at ESCE International School of Business and a film class with Dr. Casey Casebier (Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures).

In July 2017, the program will expand to include the UTC College of Business.  Students will now have the option of taking a marketing class at the French university and a macroeconomics class with Dr. Michaël Bonnal (Economics).

During their 4-week stay in the capital of France, students will also participate in cultural excursions led by the UTC faculty to visit museums, monuments, government institutions, neighborhoods and markets related to their coursework.

The application deadline for the UTC 2017 Summer in Paris program is February 15, 2017.  For additional information, contact Dr. Michaël Bonnal (Michael-Bonnal@utc.edu) or Dr. Casey Casebier (Karen-Casebier@utc.edu) or visit http://www.utc.edu/college-business/academic-programs/mba/paris-summer-study.php. The program is open to all undergraduates.  Scholarships are available, there are no pre-requisites for any classes, and there is no language requirement.
