Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation's 2017 Winter Enews

At the age of 14, I began my formal engagement in philanthropy. As a high school student, I was a member of the Youth Advisory Committee for the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, giving away thousands of dollars to support local youth. Throughout high school and college, I continued to engage with philanthropyand I've now come full circle to working at the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation as a Donor Services Officer for nearly 2 years.

Donors at our recent 2016 Founders Society Luncheon heard from an AAACF Community Scholar & her Success Coach. It was a powerful reminder of the value a support system brings to college degree achievement. Read on to see the video of their conversation, and more. With the 2017 Scholarship Application now open, I can't wait to see what the next cohort of students achieves.

This month, we're also opening applications for our Youth Council Mini-Grants program, which teaches 5th grade students about philanthropy and service. With $100 mini-grants, our Youth Council (aka, high school students) are giving 5th graders an opportunity for hands-on learning while helping them make a difference in their community.

Introducing philanthropy at an early age helps it to become a lifelong pursuit―as a volunteer and possibly even as an aerospace engineer turned philanthropy professional!

Demonstrating Philanthropy's Impact
We filmed a conversation from our Founders Society Luncheon last month, and also showed a video of our low-cost loan (impact investing) to the Ann Arbor Art Center.  Alison Foreman, Executive Director of Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels, also spoke at the event.

Scholarship Applications Are Open!
Our 2017 scholarship application is now open on the website. Last year, we gave away 156 scholarships, totaling more than $250,000 for local students. Please share this opportunity with any local high school students applying to college.

Mini-Grant Applications Are Also Open!

Expanding Philanthropy's Impact

In December, AAACF started construction to expand our conference room, thanks to generous support from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. We are excited to have drywall up now! Thanks for pardoning our noise and dust as we expand our space for more community conversations and gatherings. We can't wait for open houses later this spring!
