1. Highlights

 100 DAYS   We interviewed Professor Nilay Shah, the new Head of Department, after his first hundred days in the position. Read the interview

3. Alumni

 MEMORIES   We recently welcomed the ChemEng Class of 1963 back to Imperial for a two-day visit which included some talks, lab tours and a trip to White City. Read the story
 FLYING  Our alumnus Chris Woodroofe has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer at Gatwick Airport. Read more

4. Research News

 FRONT COVERS   Recent publications from researchers in the Department have been featured on the front covers of a number of leading journals, including Macromolecular Bioscience, Energy & Environmental Science, Faraday Discussions and Soft Matter. 
 DATA   Researchers have developed a new, high-density technique for storing digital information with the potential to overhaul optical storage media. Read more
 IMPACT  The gPROMS modelling technology and Process Systems Enterprise Ltd., a spin-out company from the Centre for Process Systems Engineering, were featured as a high-impact case study at a recent IChemE Research Committee event held in the Houses of Parliament. gPROMS was one of the 10 selected case studies shown at the event, for its huge impact on industry and academia.  JIGGLING  Edward Smith, in collaboration with other researchers from the Department, has produced an excellent video on the molecular origins of well-known fluid phenomena, including the formation of droplets, the impact of introducing chemicals like soap and bubbles in boiling. Watch the video
 MANUFACTURING  Researchers from Imperial have partnered up with industrial and academic institutions from around the UK to launch a number of new research hubs which aim to improve the UK's manufacturing processes, funded by EPSRC. Read more

5. Awards & Appointments

 AQUABATTERY  Congratulations to PhD researcher Jiajun Cen and his team of entrepreneurs who have won the renowned Herman Wijffels innovation award for their Blue Battery invention. Read more
 FLOW  Congratulations to Professor Omar Matar who has received a prestigious appointment to the PETRONAS/RAEng Research Chair in Multiphase Fluid Dynamics. Read more
 LIGNIN   Congratulations to Dr Roberto Rinaldi who has been awarded a €2million European Research Council Consolidator Grant to support his research in lignin valorisation. Read more
 SUSTAINABILITY  Congratulations to Dr Miao Guo who has been awarded an EPSRC fellowship to work on engineering for sustainability and resilience. Read more
 SIMULATIONS  Congratulations to the team led by Professor Erich Muller which won the 9th Industrial Fluid Properties Simulation Challenge. Read more
 ANGLO-THAI  Congratulations to PhD student Panatpong Hutacharoen on being awarded the 2016 Anglo-Thai Education Award for Excellence in Engineering and Technology. Read more
 30UNDER30   Congratulations to PhD student Florence Gschwend  on being featured in the 2017 Forbes List of 30 Under 30 in Europe for Science & Healthcare. Read more
 FRSC  Congratulations to Dr Roberto Rinaldi on being appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
 THESIS  Congratulations to PhD student Diana Iruretagoyena Ferrer whose PhD thesis was published in the prestigious Springer Theses. Read her thesis

6. Around the Department

 IN MEMORIAM  It is with regret that we announce the death of Shane Cadogan, a former PhD student in the Department. A fundraising page, in memory of Shane, has been set up to raise money for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. Following Shane's death in Germany the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust provided assistance bringing his body home to his family.  POLYMERS  Professor Dame Julia Higgins was recently interviewed by the BBC Radio 4 programme The Life Scientific. Hear about her life researching polymeric materials and improving the representation of women in top posts in science and medicine. Read more
 BEST  Congratulations to Dr Clemens Brechtelsbauer and the Discovery Labs team for being featured on the Imperial Educational Development Unit as a best practice case study. Read more
 AWARDS  The Awards Committee has now been running for a year and has been successfully helping to recognise the various achievements of our students and staff. Contact the Committee (ceawards@imperial.ac.uk) to alert us of any upcoming award deadlines, potential nominees or successes. Read more

 ENERGY  Starting Tuesday 24 January Energy Futures Lab is hosting weekly seminars from energy researchers at Imperial and invited guests. Held at the Royal School of Mines at 13:00 every Tuesday during term time. Free to attend and open to all. Find out more
