IB Diploma Holders

Front row, l to r:  president Ed Curtin, Madison Burhenn, IB coordinator Kathy Donovan and Audrey Bell;  back: Xavier Zonna, Ryan Boorum, Ben Waldee, Bennett McCoy and Conor Banta.  Missing from photo were Patrick Fraunknecht, Ashley Khouri, and Sampson Yuan.

Members of the class of 2016 who earned the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma returned to the school over their Christmas break to receive their diplomas.

A superior academic program, IB develops students who are inquirers, thinkers, communicators and risk-takers. These students are principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective, all characteristics fostered through an intensive course of study that encompasses independent scholarly research, metacognition, community service, thoughtful reflection and round table discussion.

We congratulate our graduates on this achievement.
Your Gift Keeps Giving

Toys collected for MCW

You may recall reading an article in Laker Life about a Christmas Toy Drive headed by Elizabeth Kuhn ’19 for Mercy Center for Women (MCW).

We wanted to let you know that the team Elizabeth led was able to collect a vast amount of donated new toys.  They also purchased over $530 in additional toys, and bought $160 in gift cards.

Alison Vanwinkle, child specialist at MCW wrote, “We were able to give Christmas to the children that live in-house at MCW, help with toys for the women in our After Care Program, as well as alumni mothers and grandmothers. With any toys, hats, gloves, warm clothing that were remaining, we took them to warming shelters around Erie as well as Community Shelter Services (an emergency shelter). We are were able to assist community families that reached out for help – a family that experienced a house fire, and a single family that experienced a significant job loss.  Thank you again for helping us make Christmas a reality for so many local families.”
Happy New Year

We hope 2017 is a great one for you and your loved ones.

It is an exciting time for MPS seniors deciding which colleges and universities are their next step on the road to successful careers and adult life.  For most, their opportunities are virtually limitless because of the outstanding preparation they have received at Mercyhurst Prep.

2017 is also exciting for 8th graders shadowing at MPS.  For many, shadowing day is when they know for sure that MPS is the right place for them.

Each of you reading this knows that the outstanding Mercy, Catholic MPS education that so wonderfully prepares students for their higher education is a sacrifice for many, and for many others, is financially out of reach.  Lives can be changed at MPS.  To help ensure that all students who want to attend can do so, no matter their ability to pay, 2017 is being declared the Year of the MPS Scholarship.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the annual appeal for the Mercyhurst Prep Fund in 2016.  The appeal continues into the new year with the goal of 100% participation.  Alumni are being asked to contribute to class scholarships.  As milestone amounts are reached, those scholarships in your name become very tangible help for struggling families.

Periodically, we will post updates in Laker Life, on Facebook and at mpslakers.com.  If you have made your annual donation to the Mercyhurst Prep Fund already, please take a few moments and let us know why it is important to you.  If your education was made possible because of scholarships and financial aid, please tell us about that, too.  Send your comments to Lisa at lznietupski@mpslakers.com.  We would love to share your thoughts.

To make your donation to the Mercyhurst Prep Fund* today, please go to mpslakers.com/mpfund.

Thank you and God bless you!

*The Mercyhurst Prep Fund is a major source of scholarships and financial aid as well as support for other programs and services that directly benefit MPS students.
