1) Documentary Screening - To the Ends of the Earth

Wednesday, January 11
7 p.m.

UPEI Campus (550 University Avenue)
Robertson Library, Room 235

The UPEI Environmental Studies Society and Save Our Seas and Shores PEI will present the award-winning feature documentary, "To The Ends of the Earth" on Wednesday, January 11th at 7 p.m. in Room 235 of Robertson Library at UPEI.

Narrated by actress Emma Thompson, “To the Ends of the Earth” takes a critical look at the state of our energy system, giving voice to some of the people whose lives are most deeply affected.  For example, the mayor of Clyde River, Nunavat, who is concerned that seismic testing for oil will harm the marine mammals on which his community depends, and a conservationist in Utah fighting to protect the Colorado River from fracking.

Following the screening, David Lavallee- the film's creator - will be available for discussion via Skype.  For more information please call Ann Wheatley - 388-8183 or email ann@cooperinstitute.ca.

2) Winter’s Tales Authors’ Reading Series

LISA MOORE: A WHOLE NEW TRIBE

(excerpt from PSA)
Lisa Moore, novelist and short story author from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and one of Canada’s most popular and innovative fiction writers, will read in Charlottetown on Monday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the UPEI Faculty Lounge, Main Building.

Intending to be a visual artist, Moore earned a B.A. at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Returning to St. John’s, she studied at Memorial and began writing fiction. This career change has resulted in three Scotiabank Giller Prize for fiction nominations, a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, a Canadian Authors Association Jubilee Award, legions of fans, and many writers being inspired by her work.

Moore’s second novel, February, was long-listed for the prestigious Man Booker Prize. The novel focuses on Helen in the decades after her husband drowned in the Ocean Ranger oil rig disaster off the Newfoundland coast. Moore’s latest novel, Caught, a fast-paced adventure story, is the story of David Slaney, a Newfoundlander and escaped convict who makes a second attempt at smuggling marijuana from Colombia to Canada.

As a short story writer, Moore has joined the ranks of Canada’s most gifted, engrossing, and provocative practitioners. As a younger author from our region, Moore lands us smack-dab in contemporary scenes and crises, with Atlantic Canadian characters born a generation or two after Alistair MacLeod’s fishers, miners, farmers, and home-makers. We’re not in mid-twentieth century Cape Breton anymore, Dorothy.

Winter’s Tales is sponsored by the UPEI English Department, Faculty of Arts, and Vice-President Academic and Research, with funding from The Canada Council for the Arts.  A reception and book-signing will follow Lisa’s reading. Admission is free.  Contact person: Dr. Richard Lemm, UPEI Department of English /   566-0592 / rlemm@upei.ca.

4) Senate Appointments Process for Vacancies in NS, NB and Ontario

The Senate of Canada plays a fundamental role in the legislative process, providing sober, second thought complementary to the elected House of Commons. The Senate also plays a key role in the representation of regions and minorities.

Under the Constitution, the Governor General has the power to appoint Senators, and by convention this power is exercised on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Constitution specifies the requirements for appointment. The constitutional roles, qualifications and fundamental functions of the Senate will be maintained under the new, non-partisan, merit-based appointment process.

The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments
The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments (IABSA) has been established to provide the Prime Minister with non-binding recommendations for Senate appointments. It is an independent and non-partisan body, guided by merit-based criteria in evaluating all candidates. More information, including the assessment criteria, is available on the IABSA website (www.canada.ca/senate-appointments).

Implementation
The new appointments process has been implemented in two phases. To reduce partisanship and increase provincial representation in the Senate in the early stages of the new Parliament, a transitional process was established.  Candidates were nominated for consideration by national, provincial and local organizations.  The IABSA provided advice to the Prime Minister on the selection of candidates for provinces with the most vacancies: Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.  Seven (7) appointments were made to the Senate under this process in the Spring of 2016.

For the permanent process, enhancements were made to the transitional process to include an open, online application process that allows Canadians to apply directly for appointment to the Senate. Under the first cycle of the permanent process for Senate appointments, the Prime Minister selected 21 candidates from seven (7) provinces for recommendation to the Governor General in the fall of 2016.

Permanent Process – Winter 2017
The current cycle of the permanent Senate appointment process will fill six (6) vacancies – one for New Brunswick, three (3) for Nova Scotia and two (2) for Ontario – which are expected to arise in 2017.

Applications will be accepted online until Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 23:59 ET. Detailed information on how to apply is provided on the IABSA website.

Potential applicants should carefully review the assessment criteria and consider how well they meet each of the requirements. Preparing an application will take some time and effort; therefore, applicants are encouraged to start on their applications as early as possible. Applicants must submit an application form, curriculum vitae, three reference letters and a Background Check Consent Form for their application to be complete.

Individual Canadians and organizations can quickly and easily share information about the Senate appointment process with potential applicants by e-mail or on social media using the “Share” button on the website.
