Happy New Year! I pray each of you experienced a blessed Christmas and had time to “retreat” a bit
with your family, friends and neighbors to celebrate the Incarnation. My own week was filled with family
and friend gatherings. It was a JOY-filled time.
All My Best,
- Mr. Ferriero

To start off the new year in PreK, we had a week of review. Everyone needed to get back into the swing of school, so we spent some time re-learning manners at school and reviewed all the letters and numbers we've learned so far. To start the week off, we made Bumblebees by following a list of directions. It was a challenge, but every did great! Also, we played whiteboard Simon Says. This was a fun way to practice writing letters, numbers, shapes, and random pictures! Some other art activities included: Hippo puppet, Gravity painting, snowflakes, and Glue Green Glitter. However, the class favorite was building towers in the clouds(shaving cream)!

We are back in school and I actually think most of the kinder kids were glad to be here to see their classmates and friends. We had a very good week, even without being able to go out side to play with the cold weather upon us. We worked with the letter Oo this week and learned about opposites. We are working with 5 and 10 groups in math and are catching on quickly. We are excited for what 2017 has in store for us!

Brr! What a way to come back to school! This week we worked with words that have the long /i/ sound. We made and checked/confirmed predictions. In math we worked on adding tens and ones together. In science we are learning about what animals need. We hope you all have a great 2017!

The second graders have been working hard and have adjusted well after time off for our Christmas break. We read a story questioning whether music existed during the Stone Age. Even though there is no recorded music from that time period, scientists discovered flutes in part of China that were 9,000 years old. They are evidence that music did exist that far back in time. In Science we have been learning about engineers and what they do. We have also learned about a design process that engineers may use when creating or improving on an item people use to make their life better. We brainstormed ideas on how to help a girl that walked her 2 dogs with leashes that keep getting tangled around her legs. The second graders came up with many good ways to change the leashes to solve her problem.

Brrr...it is a cold first week back! In the third grade room we have been staying warm and working hard. In math we are continuing to work with tables and we also worked with word problems that had extra, hidden and not enough information. In reading we read a fictional story titled "A Castle on Viola Street" which had nothing to do with a real castle but a family receiving a much needed new home. Our spelling list words this week were contractions which were a little tricky. In social studies we have been working on a travelogue journal which we are really enjoying-- an easy way to pretend we are taking a warm vacation.

We are getting back into a routine after a wonderful Christmas vacation. We have started new spelling lists to sort- some dealing with suffixes others dealing with long a and short a sounds. In math class we are practicing subtracting and ungrouping with larger numbers that go into the millions. We also are continuing to read, read, read as we love it- and the more we do it the better we get!!

This week in fifth grade we started learning about fractions in math class. The students have been working with unit fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, and using fractions in real-life situations. In reading we started our unit on fairy tales. This is one of my favorite units, and it tends to be the students' as well. This week we read several trickster tales and deciphered the themes and morals in the stories we read. It was a great, but cold, week back from Christmas break!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! After a nice break the students came back on Monday and we kicked off a new Math unit, focusing on LCM and working on gaining a better understanding of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We also learned about the terracotta army that was discovered in China 43 years ago. It was pretty interesting to learn about the history and discovery of such old artifacts. In science we have begun working on Cell Theory. The students have learned about nuclear explosions, seen plant cells up close and are taking their first quiz on cells on Thursday. It's pretty cool to watch them discover the building blocks of life!
