VSHL Salutes the Late Senator Charles J. Colgan for his Pro-Life Leadership

The Virginia Society for Human Life is deeply saddened by the death of Senator Charles J. Colgan. Senator Colgan was Prince William County representative in the Senate of Virginia for 40 years. He was a dedicated and courageous leader in the Senate of Virginia and a man of great integrity.

Senator Colgan was there in the early days when abortion forces fought any legislation that would limit abortion on demand as had been legalized by the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v Wade.  In 1978 Senator Colgan led the defeat of HB-502 which would have funded all legal abortions under Medicaid.  This meant that the lives of thousands of unborn children would be  saved from abortion.  It also meant that citizen tax money would not be paying for abortions under Medicaid in Virginia.

Senator Colgan was pro-life. He supported protection in law of the life of the unborn child. The purpose of such a law was described in the 1949 Virginia Supreme Court decision in Russell v. Bennett to be the protection of the life of the unborn child and through it, society.
