NEWS

Mayor Most Proud of Library's Success

From the Salamanca Press, January 4, an interview with the outgoing mayor:

"Overall, Ball said his relationships with several city department heads had been mostly positive throughout his term. He mentioned Carpenter, Fire Chief Nick Bocharski, Library Director Kirsten Woodin and Youth Bureau Director Sandi Brundage as some who kept him informed about what was happening in their departments on a regular basis... 'They would always put forth the effort, so it wasn’t so much me seeking them out, but they would get in touch with me,' Ball said

Ball said seeing the Salamanca Public Library receive a grant for $256,000 for building improvements was among his proudest for a department head."

ADVICE

ASK FOR ADVICE ~~ GIVE ADVICE

This Week's Question:
I want to do more for families with babies and toddlers, but not sure how to get started.  Does anyone have experience starting an early literacy program who could give me some tips?  We are a small library and if we did baby storytimes I'd either have to do it myself (not totally comfortable with that) or get a volunteer.  --Not a Children's Librarian

Last Week's Question:
If you had unlimited funds, what would you do at your library? Dream big!  --Drunken Sailor

I would add a second story so that we could have a beautiful community room with space for larger activities. It would be so sweet!  -Amy The Dreamer

I would add a maker space with a full kitchen and wood working bench.  --R.S.

Stop sorting book sale books!  --Tired and Sore

I'd probably use it on really great programming, so we could bring in authors, offer free yoga classes, and so on. I always wanted to have homework tutors to help kids after school.  And then I'd give my staff health insurance!  --Not a lottery winner unfortunately

The Sustainability Academy Library:
One Part of the Whole

Submitted by Jennifer Ferriss.

We believe that by teaching students to be advocates both for the environment, for the local economy and for social equity and justice that we can build a future that is sustainable and desirable.” Brian Williams, Sustainability Academy. ( Williams, Jamie. (2012, November 8). The Skinny Pancake and The Sustainability Academy. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV_84eU-vzk&feature=youtu.be)

In 2008, the Burlington (VT) School Board voted to create the Lawrence Barnes Elementary, the nation’s first K-5 magnet school with a sustainability theme.  The Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes is the result of a five-year collaboration between Shelburne Farms’ Sustainable Schools Project and the Burlington School District.  Shelburne Farms’ Education for Sustainability (EFS) model uses a school-wide approach.  EFS is designed to help schools use sustainability as an integrating context for curriculum, community partnerships, and campus practices... NYLA's Library Advocacy Day
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2017

Each year library advocates from across New York State converge on Albany to voice their support for funding and policies that benefit libraries.
Together our efforts have resulted in over $11M in additional library aid since 2011.

Summary of Event

Most activities will take place in the Legislative Office Building (LOB). The LOB is most easily accessed from the Concourse, or through the Capitol Building.  Prepare for airport-like security while entering the building.  NYLA 'Base Camp' will be available in LOB120 beginning at 8:00AM for packet pick-up and sign-in.

Advocacy Day Packets: Materials are distributed to Library Advocacy Day attendees to use in their meetings with legislators and staff, and can be picked up in room 120 of the Legislative Office Building.

READ Posters
Members of the Legislature have been invited to have their photographs taken for READ posters between 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM.  (Invite your representative to have their photo taken for a READ poster!)

The Rally for Library Advocates 12:00 PM
Gather in the "Well" of the LOB at 12:00 PM for a Library Advocate's Rally!
Join fellow Library Advocates and plan to make your voices heard!

Legislative Office Visits
Meetings with individual Legislators (or their office) are coordinated by library systems, or regional coordinators.  NYLA will have a listing of all the legislative office visits that we have been made aware of at the NYLA Base Camp (LOB120).

Organizing a Group or meeting with a Legislator? Please fill out the Library Advocacy Day Contact Form

Please be sure to review the NYLA Legislative Priorities prior to your meetings.
