Next Book Sale

Our next semi-annual book sale will be May 5-7. Please contact Allison Austin if you'd like to volunteer.

Annual Meeting

Our January meeting will be a combined annual and bimonthly meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 6:30 pm in the Community Room. All are welcome to attend.

Friends Partnerships

Over the past year the Friends have developed partnerships with three other nonprofits where we donate books to benefit kids and veterans in the community.

Caring Closet. This Tigard-Tualatin School District program provides clothes, shoes, hygiene products, and emergency bedding supplies to children within the district who are in need. They also keep shelves full of books for kids of all ages. We've given them young adult books left over after our book sales and in turn, have received donations of children’s books when they're overstocked. Pictured above is Anne Hasson, the book coordinator at the Caring Closet, holding some of the young adult books we donated.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center. We donate several boxes of books every few months to the Veterans Hospital. VA volunteers make the rounds with a book cart, distributing fiction and nonfiction to people who have served our country. We consider it an opportunity to thank veterans for their service.

St. Paul Parochial School. A shopper at our semi-annual book sale told us she's a teacher at St. Paul Parochial School in St. Paul, Oregon. She was buying books for the school because there's no budget for its library. We decided to help out, so we set aside books for the school when we have excess inventory.

If you know of any other nonprofits that could benefit from a partnership with the Friends, be sure to let us know.

Sunday Music Series

The Tualatin Library is continuing the Sunday Music Series into 2017 with a $2000 donation from the Friends. These concerts take place around the hearth with chairs rearranged in a semi-circle. They usually start at 2 pm and last an hour.

Musicians chosen for the Sunday Music Series are an eclectic mix of folk, rock, classical, and world music. In December there were two concerts: Brian Oberlin played the mandolin and rock violinist Aaron Meyer (pictured above) entertained with a seasonal program.

Next up on January 22nd is Mbrascatu, an indie rock band that draws from diverse European and American roots to create a unique signature sound. Be there or be square.

Friends 2016 Donations to the library

The Friends donated a total of $20,050 to the Tualatin Public Library in 2016. Here's a list of the programs we supported:
  • Art of the Story Festival
  • Teen "Unlucky in Love" Party
  • Dragon Puppet Theater & Mo Willems Party
  • Teen Make it Program
  • Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros Program
  • Summer Reading Kick Off Activities
  • Children's Summer Reading Program
  • Teen Summer Reading Program
  • Bilingual Family Summer Carnival
  • Movie License
  • Sunday Music Series
We look forward to providing a similar level of support to the library in 2017.

Spotlight on Donna Gilbo

Donna Gilbo is one of our most active Friends members, serving the organization in a variety of roles since 2009. She has served as board member, treasurer, membership committee chair, and ongoing book sale co-chair.

"It's exciting to try new things," Donna says about her work with the ongoing book sale. Thanks to Donna's can-do attitude the Friends have tried all kinds of new things with the ongoing book sale: sci-fi and romance bag sales, a Black Friday BOGO sale, and themed sales with tie-ins to various holidays and community events.

Donna also helps the Friends with her connections to other organizations. She's a quilter who volunteers with the Coffee Creek Quilters prison quilting program. CCQ occasionally receives donations of quilting books they can't use. Donna serves as a liaison, transferring the books to the Friends for our book sales.

She also has a connection with veterans through her husband Ted's membership in the VFW. As she's culling books for the Friends, Donna keeps an eye out for books she thinks hospitalized veterans might enjoy. Every few months she and Ted drop off several boxes to the local VA hospital.

Donna is usually at the library restocking the ongoing book sale shelves on Friday mornings. We hope you'll stop by and say hello.
