That's a wrap on 2016!
We're proud to share that 2016 was a record-breaking year for Regina Cat Rescue (RCR) with 473 cats rescued and 407 cats adopted - up from 380 rescues and 362 adoptions in 2015. As no cat leaves RCR's care unsterilized, this also resulted in a considerable increase in the number of spay and neuter surgeries undertaken throughout the year.
And the good work didn't stop there! Nineteen community cats were trapped, neutered/spayed and returned to managed colonies where they're provided with food, water and shelter daily. Volunteers managed 32 RCR community cat colonies and supported 42 colonies managed by individuals throughout Regina.
To help fund this valuable work, 22 fundraisers were organized and executed throughout the year, and 175 volunteers stepped up to help out in a wide variety of roles, including bingos, selling pizza at Rider games, fostering cats in need, screening adoption applications, feeding community cats, and so much more.
Throughout the year there were a number of special cats who faced extraordinary challenges. Magda and Ewan both survived being thrown from moving vehicles in separate incidents this summer. We're happy to report that both have fully recovered from their injuries and are thriving. Things weren't looking good for Tilly when she arrived in RCR care suffering from a serious infection, anemia, extremely low blood sugar, hypothermia and a broken jaw. It's been a long road to recover for this sweet girl, but thanks to a lot of TLC she should be available for adoption soon. Ashanti also arrived in RCR care in a critical condition due to an obstruction, but with a successful surgery she made a full recovery and has now found an amazing forever family who adores her. Sadly, every year comes with loss and 2016 was no different. Volunteers had to say tough goodbyes to community cats Pearl and Jessica.
The success of 2016 was possible because of the incredible dedication of RCR's volunteers and generous support of donors, local businesses, satellite adoption centres and partner veterinary clinics. We extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to all who donated, volunteered, fostered, sponsored or adopted in 2016. All the best for 2017!
