NIH and AHRQ update font guidelines
For applications submitted for due dates on or after January 25, text in PDF attachments must follow these minimum requirements:
  • Font size must be 11 points or larger (smaller text in figures, graphs, diagrams and charts is acceptable as long as it is legible at 100% view)
  • Type density must be no more than 15 characters per linear inch, including characters and spaces
  • Line spacing must be no more than six lines per vertical inch
Recommended fonts are Arial, Georgia, Helvetica, and Palatino Linotype although other fonts are acceptable provided they meet above requirements. There is no longer a restriction on the text color, although black or other high-contrast text colors are recommended since they are legible to the largest audience.

Characteristics and outcomes of R01 Competing Renewal Applications (Type 2s)
While new investigators are almost as successful as experienced investigators in obtaining new (type 1) R01s, the difference between new investigator and experienced investigator success rates widens when looking at competing renewals (type 2s). Success rates of new investigators’ first renewals. however, were lower than those of experienced investigators. The findings presented in this analysis show that among type 2 R01 applications, the strongest correlates of success are peer review impressions of approach and significance.

Reminder: Use of Final RPPR became effective on January 1
As announced in November 23rd notice, NIH replaced the Final Progress Report with the Final RPPR effective on January. For more information please see:
F series application due dates synchronized
Beginning this year, diversity F31 fellowship applications will be due on the same date as all other F applications - April 8, August 8, and December 8.

How to use OBI Grants Management to identify accounts for the new GMAS budget tool
If you are a grant manager, you may know that a new tool for submitting budgets to the General Ledger is included in the 12/19/2016 GMAS release, but did you also know that you can use a dashboard in OBI Grants Management to help you identify accounts to be updated using this new GMAS tool?

Internal OSP FY16 Annual Report
The Harvard Office for Sponsored Programs FY16 Annual Report is now available to Harvard staff and affiliates here through HarvardKey login. The report, which is developed for internal purposes, provides a summary of the FY16 sponsored research results.

Reminders:

HMS Non-Sponsored Billing Agreement process update:
One of HMS SPA’s ongoing efforts has been to clarify and document the HMS process for Billing Agreements (BAs). Through these discussions, we have determined that having one point of contact for all BAs, both sponsored and non-sponsored, will help streamline the process. Therefore, effective January 3rd, please contact your SPA GCO for assistance with both sponsored and non-sponsored BAs. SPA will dock in with the Office of Finance on non-sponsored BAs as necessary. We are also working with the Office of Finance to prepare a non-sponsored BA template, which we will post to the HLCRA website shortly. FAQs have been updated appropriately.
