A Path to Safe, Healthy Neighborhoods and Cities in 2017

Georgia saw some exciting gains for bicycling in 2016: new Bicycle Friendly Universities, an award for innovative transportation planning in south Georgia, the nation's largest pop-up bike network in Macon, and dozens of events and programs to support and encourage safe bicycling for all ages and abilities.

2016 saw its share of bad news, too: a continuing increase in roadway fatalities, especially among vulnerable road users, a tragedy on the statewide bike tour, and stalled implementation of local Complete Streets policies.

We're here to build on the successes and to aggressively confront the problems and obstacles to better bicycling. We advocate for proven, effective strategies that make bicycling a safe, everyday activity for all Georgians.
See below for a info on our programs and resources that can help your community be bicycle friendly. Thanks for your ongoing support. We look forward to working with you in 2017 and beyond!

Our Pocket Guides promote safe, lawful bicycling and urge motorists to respect and use caution around people on bikes. Request free copies for your business or organization!

We're working on passing a Vulnerable Road User law, which will 1) define who vulnerable road users are and 2) increase penalties for injuring or killing them. If you support Georgia having such a law, please call your state Representative and Senator and let them know. Find them here. When you call, just say the following:

Hello, my name is [name], and I am a constituent who lives at [address]. I support a  Vulnerable Road User law in Georgia and ask the [Representative/Senator] to support such a law. Thank you.

Georgia Bikes is building a library of radio and TV PSAs as well as graphic design resources you can adapt for local safety campaigns. Share the PSAs with broadcast media and use our graphics for print ads, banners, leaflets, stickers, or social media campaigns. Drop us a line for more info!
Keep your riders safe! Your bicycling event can use up to 10 of these eye-catching safety signs. How? Sign your ride up as one of our Supporting Events. We'll set you up with 10 signs, and we'll promote your ride to thousands of Georgia bicyclists!
Our Safety Education Program Manager is here to help! Contact Nedra for information on hosting a Smart Cycling class in your community. She can also work with you to schedule a free training for local law enforcement.
While we're focusing our Complete Streets efforts on five key cities in 2017, we want to share information on how (and why) to create safe, family-friendly streets and trails with every interested community in Georgia. Contact Elliott, our Complete Streets Coordinator, to set up a workshop, presentation, or strategy meeting for your city!
Georgia's "Share the Road" specialty car tags directly support bicyclist safety and education programs across the state. Show your support for bicycling in Georgia with a Share the Road tag.
Georgia Bikes is a member-supported non-profit organization. Our mission is to promote bicycling for recreation and transportation and to improve bicycling conditions throughout Georgia. Find out more and become a member at GeorgiaBikes.org.
