Results, Statements, Buying Local

Our first Customer Satisfaction Survey was published January 9th and the results are in!  We strive very hard to meet and exceed our customers expectations in Quality and Service. Thanks to everyone that took the time to answer the survey and is assisting us in improving Hegwood Electric. You can find the results at the end of the newsletter.
In our Corporate Statements, we use the words Quality, Service, Passion, and Creating Solutions. Over the next couple of newsletters, we want to touch on the definition and meaning of these words and how it differentiates us from other companies. However, they not only differentiate Hegwood Electric but through us, they reflect on your company and your products and we take that responsibility very serious.  Lastly, this ALL bundles up into what we are terming as "Insurance". Please note the teaser!

Frank Lamb of Automation Consulting Services published a short article titled, "Five reasons to use local vendors for buying technical products." In the current world of Globalization, one might ask themselves what is "local", but the article has some great points.

We hope you enjoy this months newsletter.
Five reasons to use local vendors for buying technical products

As we noted above, this article by Frank Lamb lists five reasons to buy local.  "Local" in this era of Globalization might have a different meaning to various people.  Does local mean within your own city? Within your own state? Country? We would say it depends on the specialization and expertise of those providing the service.and/or product and if it's technical in nature.

The five reasons listed are:
  • Technical Support - Vendor expertise that is close and responsive
  • Education - Lunch and learn and training courses that are local
  • Stocking programs - Products on the shelf
  • Shipping costs/time - Freight, Duty, Tariffs, Turn Around
  • A friendly face - Sitting down with your local vendor brings benefits

What is Quality? How does this affect you?

Quality is a measure of excellence or a state of being free from defects.

When you review a product you're buying, control panels for example, what is "quality" and what exactly are you looking for? Is it the perceived quality of the component manufacturers - i.e. PLC, HMI, relays, etc.? Is it the quality of the overall assembled product when using different component manufacturers? Does craftsmanship enter into quality?  Is factory acceptance testing (FAT) a part of overall quality? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, WHY is quality so important?

I would submit that YES is the answer to all of the above and here are just a couple of reasons:
  • Containing costs (lost labor, downtime, and scrap material) is a priority in the manufacturing environment and can be done through purchasing quality machinery and their associated control systems. How much is downtime?
  • Training staff to understand the cost of poor quality is an imperative. Repairing a defect in the field is very costly. Damaged reputation, replacement parts, and warranty work all come into calculating the cost of poor quality.
