Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Seen as a day “on” instead of a day off to many, MLK Day has been designated as a day to reflect upon the efforts made by Dr. King in the civil rights movement and to honor those efforts by finding ways of serving in the community.
January 29, 2017 Walk the Walk
Led by Dani Beale and worship associate Elaine Bowen
This service will reflect on the experience of the Women's March on Washington on January 21st, and will explore ways to engage more directly with our democracy in the days and years to come.

Save the Date: Teacher Training Saturday, January 28
The Religious Education Teacher Training is scheduled for Saturday, January 28 from 9:00 am -12:30 pm. There will be a special program, refreshments, and time to meet in teacher teams to map out schedules for the rest of the year, More information will be provided in the next few weeks.
Youth Overnighter and Souper Sunday!
- Saturday, February 11 at UUCK
- 7pm Saturday to Sunday morning
- In addition to hanging out and spending the night, we'll be making soup to sell on Sunday morning. A portion of the proceeds will be donated and a portion will be used to fund future Youth Group activities.

RE Intersession continues through the month of January. Through the use of songs, art, games and stories we hope to inspire our young UU Peacemakers to answer the question "What can one little person do to change the world?" Kathy's Challenge for the Congregation!
Our Capital Campaign pledges continue to come in, but it would be great to have some extra cash on hand for our expansion. That's where you come in! I will donate $100 for every fundraiser that is held for the Capital Campaign by June 30, 2017 (because early money is the most helpful). If your fundraiser makes more than $1000 I will donate $200. While all donations to the campaign are very much appreciated, this challenge is for fundraisers where 100% of the proceeds go to the capital campaign.
Interested? Just submit an application for a church fundraiser (available on the church website, in the annex, or from MaryBeth Hannan) and submit to MaryBeth. Fundraisers do not have to be held in church or directed only to members of the congregation, so I encourage everyone to be creative.

Parents of Young UU's Meet this Friday, January 20
"It's hard to join church groups when you are raising small people"
If that statement rings true for you then this is the group for you! We are families with young children and we meet the 3rd Friday of each month for a family potluck dinner followed by a parent meeting with certified childcare providers on site. A Chorus of Voices: A Celebration of African-American Writers
Please join our nine readers in the UUCK Sanctuary this Saturday, January 21, at 7:00 for our readers' theatre tribute to African American authors. In this week when we remember the work of Martin Luther King and other great American civil rights leaders, we're honored to share a wide range of hopes, concerns, dreams, memories, and love as expressed in selections from African-American poetry, prose, and drama. This event, which is free and open to the public, is part of our 150th Anniversary celebration. Please encourage friends and neighbors to attend.
Desserts will be served in Fessenden at Intermission-- contact Sandy Eaglen if you would like to bring in a dessert to share.
For those of us who aren't going to be in Washington this Saturday, "A Chorus of Voices" is an opportunity to come together to celebrate the diversity of some of America's most beautiful and important voices.

Remembering Rev. Melissa
Would you like to share memories of Rev. Melissa with other church members? Would you like a comforting space to express the sense of loss you're experiencing due to Melissa's absence?
As UUA consultant Midge Miles explained on Sunday, we are each at a different place in terms of our reaction to the ministerial transition. At one end of the spectrum are those who are eager to move forward and explore upcoming changes. At the other end are individuals who are deeply grieving Rev. Melissa's departure and need time to process their feelings. For these individuals, a gathering will be held for the open expressing of feelings about her departure. Bobbi Beale, clinical psychologist, will help facilitate this time of sharing and support. She will lead us in some activities and strategies to identify, process and possibly release some of the grief that can seem stuck or overwhelming. Plant Based Potluck & Presentation on The Environment and Modern Agriculture -- Friday, February 3
Come at 6:30 for the potluck or 7:30 for the speaker.
Whether curious or committed, all are welcome to join us for our next potluck on Friday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Fessenden Hall. Please bring a plant-based (vegan) dish to share. Your contribution can be as simple as a bowl of fresh fruit or a plate of steamed broccoli.
On this evening we will welcome Katie Medlock, a Humane Educator with the Ethical Choices Program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. At 7:30 PM Katie will be presenting a program on:
The Environment and Modern Agriculture
We will explore how raising farmed animals and related crops affect
ecosystems and our health through climate change, the depletion of natural
resources, the pollution of soil, water and air, the use of pesticides,
antibiotics, soil erosion, deforestation and world hunger. Participants discuss
alternative choices that can help protect our environment.

New UU Classes Next Month!
Curious? Interested in learning more? Ready to take the next step?
Our New UU classes cover everything you wanted to know about the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent in particular and Unitarian Universalism in general, but didn’t know where to go or whom to ask. Well, maybe not everything, but we try to give you an overview, a starting point. Some history of both, some organizational details. Come join the conversation. And, if you're curious about membership, this is the place to be.
Part 1 will be on Sunday, February 12, from 9-11 am. Part 2 will be on Sunday,February 19, from 9-11 am. You may attend one or both, although attendance at both is encouraged. Different topics will be covered in each. We will gather at the Annex, the yellow house next to the church.

SNOW DAYS -- With winter weather upon us, we are aware that there may be occasions when we need to cancel programming at the church. Though we are unlikely to need to cancel Sunday services entirely, we may choose to have only the second service if the weather or the roads warrant a delay. It is more likely that we may need to cancel our religious education program in inclement weather as many of our volunteer teachers and advisors drive some distance to get to church.
If the weather or the condition of the roads cause you to wonder whether we are proceeding with our programming as scheduled, please check for cancellations before you head out.

Kent Interfaith Alliance Rally - January 21
Join us in Kent Ohio along with millions around the nation and around the globe to declare in no uncertain terms that we will stand in the way of criminalization, mass deportation and hatred. We stand for bringing togehter all of America, and for just action for all.
The Kent InterFaith Alliance (KIFA) and all in the community wishing to support this effort will be assembling at the Portage Count Court House in Kent.
We will come from all over town from worship centers, meeting halls, campus and businesses. The meeting at the courthouse steps will:
- Show united support for all of our elected officials to unify our country in waging, ”liberty and justice for all”.
- To call on them and ourselves to respect all people while representing all irrespective of race, gender, religion, income, or orientations.
- To take action on policies to bring about this reconciliation and justice, and reject policies which will divide us and/or promote some citizens over others.
Weather depending, people will walk by faith or groups from their houses of worship to the steps in symbolic action. We encourage the carrying of signs identifying your self, and your justice issues. Those too distant may meet first at another’s closer center. Those who may be fearful, or just want a bigger group can ask others over to join them. Those who don't want to walk can just meet at the Kent Courthouse steps at 2PM for the flash mob assembly.
Elected officials appearing are asked to share briefly their work for reconciliation and justice. We will express support of our elected officials doing this mixed back and forth with individuals calling to be represented in all official work.
We will then walk together to the nearby Gateway center. Short action presentations will be exchanged with action ideas to take home. Music shared will uplift our spirits. The event can lead us to become a more united engaged community enacting America’s founding ideals for all.
The Trump team has already announced that some of their first acts will be to lash out against immigrants and Muslims. They want to deport millions of immigrants, rip families apart and drive tens of millions of immigrants, refugees and friends into silence out of fear.
The day after Donald Trump’s inauguration as a President, it is critical that the majority stand up and say NO to Trump’s promised negatives and YES to his other statements about reconciling the country. We say YES to community, love for one another, shared strength and human dignity. It is time for us to link arms, call for justice and as needed stand as a line of defense.
