STEM Opportunity for Middle School Afterschool Programs

The Montana Girls STEM Collaborative is offering free STEM resources and training to educators who work with middle school students in after-school or out-of-school programs. Following the successful fall launch of the Science Action Club: Bugs in Your Schoolyard, the spring session will feature Birds in Your Schoolyard. They are looking for 6-8 new teams for this spring session.

Montana Healthcare Foundation 2017 Call for Proposals
The Montana Healthcare Foundation (MHCF) is now accepting proposals for their 2017 grant cycles. Nonprofits and tax-exempt educational institutions are eligible to apply and MHCF lists this project example that might be relevant to afterschool programs: “Partnerships outside the health sector: Proposals that seek to build partnerships with organizations beyond the health sector (for example: schools, local businesses, community and economic developers, or departments of planning and transportation) to build strong, resilient communities and address issues, such as poor housing, limited opportunities for youth engagement, community support for seniors, unemployment, or access to healthful foods.” Learn more.

How are you partnering with Libraries?
The Afterschool Alliance, along with the STAR Library Education Network wants to know if and how afterschool providers are working with public libraries.Their goals are to build bridges between the afterschool and library fields, so that both can share knowledge and resources to better serve youth. Even if you’ve never worked with a public library before, take the survey—your thoughts and experiences will help inform their future work. The survey should take 20 minutes or less to complete, and everyone who completes it will be entered to win a prize. Survey closes February 1.

Connecting with Legislators
 Helena is abuzz with the 65th Legislature in town! The Montana Afterschool Alliance (MTAA) sent an introductory letter to all our Montana legislators during the first week of the session. With this letter of introduction, we offered to connect them with local afterschool programs in their area. Our MTAA Network Lead, Julia Gustafson, will pass along any requests she receives. Julia also represented MTAA and afterschool programs at the Montana Nonprofit Day at the Capital on January 13. She joined over 100 nonprofit professionals in highlighting the role of nonprofits to our policy-makers and administration.
