BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Gay Jeanne Bower
I actively represent all members of WAHA on many levels as follows: WAHA: Former President & Vice President, CoManager of May Show/BADGER CLASSIC for several years, Assistant Manager of August Show, Co-Chair and assisted in managing the Arabian Booth at The Midwest Horse Fair, Assisted with the first T.A.I.L. program, Managed the Point System, now helping Debbie & Cheryl, Manage all insurance for the many WAHA activities, Represented WAHA at WSHC, Managed Annual Meetings for many years, Managed the Ambassador Award. Region 10: Delegate representing WAHA for over 15 years, Chair, Mary Anne Grimell Memorial Scholarships, Served on the Judges & Stewards Commissioners’ Review Panel at a national level, Vice-Chair and Chair of the Amateur Committee; Vice-Chair and Chair of the Awards Committee; member Annual Convention Planning Committee at a national level; member Regional & National Classes Committee. I would appreciate your support.

Cheryl Bumgarner
I am running for a position on the WAHA board of directors. I have been serving on the board for the past 3 years, helping with the Badger Classic and August shows, clinic and nominating committees. I have provided a horse for the Midwest Horse Fair classes at the Badger Classic and August shows where we have an hour to teach a novice how to show an Arabian at halter. I live in Black Earth with my husband, Tom, a chocolate Labrador named Jill and cats Carmine and Matilda. I have a great time working as a veterinary assistant at the Black Earth Veterinary Clinic. I have owned Arabian horses for 40 years, riding for pleasure, on the ranch and on the trail. Four years ago I purchased an Half Arabian gelding named Its A Dun Deal and started showing. We show in western pleasure and halter and are going to try side saddle this year (Wish us luck!) In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, and playing with my grandchildren. Thank you for the opportunity to serve WAHA and your continued support.

Karissa Held
I have been a member of WAHA for 10 years. In addition to participating at WAHA's shows, I was involved with WAHA youth. I competed on the youth judging team and participated in the show highpoint programs. Last summer I volunteered my horse for the Midwest horse fair halter class. 4H: I showed my Arabian at the Dane county fair until I aged out of 4H. I also showed my Arabian at the state 4H expo and dressage/hunter show. I was the president of my club for two years, and served several other positions including vice president, secretary, and treasurer during my years in 4H. WIHA: I showed my Arabian in every discipline offered while I was young enough to compete. Since aging out I have volunteered my horse to other youth to compete with and have maintained involvement as a coach/assistant coach. I would love the opportunity to promote the Arabian horse and give back to WAHA, as it gave me so many opportunities as a youth. I know that there has been talk of a WAHA trail ride and I think it would be great to make this happen. I also think it would great to bring involvement and participation to new things when possible, such as the Working Western Celebration held in Madison.

Sydney Arnold
I have been a WAHA member for the last 15+ years and as a youth. I was actively involved in the WAHA Youth and judging team. Since my youth involvement, I have continued to show as a WAHA member at club sponsored shows. I am a current member of Pro-Cess, an organization focused on engaging professionals at all levels of their careers, and providing development, leadership and mentoring opportunities to young professionals. I have been actively involved in volunteer and networking opportunities through this organization. In addition to attending the monthly meetings, I would like the opportunity to help organize and volunteer at WAHA sponsored shows and events. I hope to provide suggestions and positive feedback to the group regarding ways to improve efficiencies, grow membership interest/involvement, and continue success.

Julie McKee
I am relatively new to WAHA. Over the past 4 years I have attended several WAHA shows as well as Region 10. Last year I volunteered and helped at the WAHA May show. Other community involvement include Mazomanie Historical Society 2012—2015, Event planning and Publicity; Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints North Chicago Public Affairs Director 2003—2006 Event planning and Publicity; Rockton, IL Chamber of Commerce 2004—2005 Event planning and Publicity; March of Dimes Chicago 1990—1993 Event planning and Publicity. I envision my role on the board related to event planning and publicity. Everyone’s opinion is needed in any organization and on any Board. In all my previous Board involvement I’ve been thrilled when people have ideas different then my own. Different perspectives give us the opportunity to do our best work. But at the end of the day, someone needs to make a final decision and a Board needs to be a team, even when we may not all agree. It’s like a family. Bickering derails goals. Negativity derails success.

Jessica Stachulak
I have not lived in the WAHA area for all that long. I have been a participant in two WAHA shows and enjoy the amateur friendly side WAHA offers. I want to be more involved with WAHA on a year-round basis. I work full time as a YMCA youth summer camp director. This has given me the unique opportunity work with large number of volunteers, I organize a large number of events all the time, I can work with large groups of people in a calm and effective manner, I negotiate contracts with outside vendors for events and off-site trips and it is a unique skill set I love to use and others benefit from. I have had multiple roles in organizations through camping. I worked for many years in the equine program at Camp Anokijig, and since becoming a full-time camp professional in 2013, I have enjoyed horses as a hobby and passion and camp as my career. American Camp Association- Volunteer Lead Visitor Midstates Camp ConferenceVolunteer and Steering Committee Member 2014 Camp Anokijig Weekend Volunteer 2005-2014 Horsepower Healing Center- Volunteer 2014- Current Jericho Productions Horse Show Volunteer, 2014-Current.
I have a number of skills sets that I will be happy to contribute to the WAHA board. I have a passion for logistics and organizing large events behind the scenes; I do it every day for my job, and I love when I can do it for something else as well. Whether it would be a show, clinic, or group dinner, I am always up for the challenge. I have a passion for working with volunteers as well as being a volunteer. I understand what being a volunteer means, and I see what great things volunteers can accomplish. I am always up for a new adventure with a great group of people so it there is need, I am always willing to help.

Jamie Buedler
Current member seeking a director position.

OFFICERS
Lerin Hendrickson - Candidate for President
Lerin Hendrickson is an internationally accomplished equestrian from Madison, WI. With over 22 years of experience with horses, and more than 20 years’ experience as an exhibitor, she was essentially born in a barn. Lerin has spent the past two years as a director for the Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association and is currently pursuing an officer position as president.

Lerin functions as the club’s newsletter editor. Most notably, Lerin maintains the clubs Facebook page and group as a way to promote the club and increase interaction with the membership. As a WAHA director, Lerin has worked on the Badger Classic show committee with Madeline Erce to facilitate the addition of Sport Horse classes. Lerin managed the WAHA open show in 2016, and with the help of volunteers and donors, the show brought a profit of approximately $1000 for the day.

Additionally, Lerin has volunteered, ridden in, and helped coordinate the Region 10 Midwest Horse Fair demonstration. Alongside horse fair, Lerin sought to promote the breed by reaching out to local government. In 2015, Scott Walker recognized the month of May as Arabian horse month, which was featured in Modern Arabian Horse magazine. Lerin is a great supporter of club’s activities and new programs, and has also provided mentorship through the Midwest Horse Fair Halter class at the Badger and August Shows. In the past, she rode with WAHA on the streets of Chicago in Native Costume, promoting the Arabian Horse at the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Lerin has been an amateur member of WAHA since 2002. Lerin trains her own Arabians, BH KhouRaji and BB Don Amigo in Region 10 and Canada. Lerin and her horses have together earned a Canadian national top ten, Two Regional Championships, 4 Regional Reserve championships and many more top 5 honors. BB Don Amigo was also shown by WAHA youth members Ainsley Stapelfeldt, Hunter Offord and Hannah Krueger, who earned two Canadian national top tens, a regional championship and a regional reserve championship.

Outside of WAHA, Lerin was one of the founding members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Equestrian Club and intercollegiate show teams. Lerin even volunteered to help the group as an Alumnus. Lerin spent over a decade in the Dane County 4H Horse & Pony Project, serving as a superintendent, club vice-president, treasurer and report over the years. She has ridden her Arabians at the County, State fairs, college campuses and many parades. Lerin has her B.A. form the University of Wisconsin Platteville in Spanish Language, Mathematics and Biotechnology. She works as a Scientist in the microbiology division of a contract pharmaceutical research organization called PPD Laboratories. She spends her free time with friends and family, but most of her passions are horse related. Beyond showing, her horses are her pets and trail riding companions.

Madeline Erce - Candidate for Vice President
My name is Madeline Erce and I would love to hold the position of Vice President for WAHA. I would be honored to have your vote for Vice President for three main reasons: my fresh ideas, my dressage and sport horse background and my AOTS status.

I was first voted into a Board Member position in 2015. Immediately, I started the WAHA Instagram page, which now has over 3,600 followers. I’ve always supported sport horse and dressage classes. After attending some Badger Classic committee
meetings, and with the help of Lerin Hendrickson, I was able to implement sport horse classes at the 2016 show with great success. We will again repeat the sport horse  classes in 2017 and are hopin for an even better turnout. It was also my idea to start the Badger Classic Versatility Award, which will make its debut in 2017. To be eligible for this award, you must enter one sport horse class, one equitation class and one pleasure class at the show. This award will hopefully encourage exhibitors to branch out and try new classes.

My dressage and sport horse experience offers me a unique view on the Arabian breed. I have competed at both Arabian shows and USDF All Breed shows over the years. I can bring different ideas from the USDF shows to help make our Arabian shows
even better. These disciplines only have room for growth and I intend to keep on promoting them.

I own three horses, but my main show horse is a special guy. JW Alexandrite+++// is AOTS (amateur, owned, trained and shown) by me. He has taken me to many exciting accomplishments including: 4 national championships, 3 reserve national championships, 21 regional championships and my USDF Bronze and Silver Medals. It has been challenging and rewarding to bring him up the levels in dressage.

One of my favorite parts about the 2016 show season was starting to ride dressage musical freestyles. We are hoping to make our debut at Intermediate-1 during the 2017 season. By having an AOTS horse, I can bring a different view to the WAHA table. Thank you for considering me to be your next Vice President!

Deb Duick- Candidate for Treasurer

I have been and am still actively involved in show management: WAHA Classic – 8 years, WAHA August – 10 years, Arabian Futurity Festival 8 years and co-manager Fall Colors Open show and Arabian Community Show – 3years. In addition I have been assistant manager or manager of the Region 10 Championship Shows since 1995.

Previously I was on the Commissioner’s Review Panel for 6 years and am currently entering my eighth year as m member of the Judges and Stewards Selection Committee and am current chair of that Committee. I would like to continue to serve WAHA as a Delegate at the Regional and National levels.

Giving Tuesday
Nyssa Sheridan

I was inspired by the movement of Giving Tuesday to start a fundraising campaign to raise money for scholarships at Horse Power Healing Center.  Giving Tuesday started as a way to follow Black Friday and focus on giving back in some manner to the community.

Horses have been a very special part of my life, as they have empowered me to see beyond my disability. As some may or may not know, I have a bilateral hearing loss. Through my horses, I have felt equal, despite my limitations.

I didn't originally start off in the horse world with therapeutic riding, but once I fell down the rabbit hole, I have realized how much of a difference can be made in others' lives by volunteering and assisting in simple ways.

The fundraising response was fantastic and I am proud to say that with the help of friends, many of them from within the Arabian community, we met our goal of $500 by raising $520!  While it seems like a minor amount, it enables a couple of students that could not otherwise ride, to feel the empowerment that horses have to offer.

Thank you to everyone from the Arabian and horse community as a whole that has stepped up to help my goal, or did a different action on Giving Tuesday to pay it forward.  I am always humbled by kind generosity of the equestrian community.  Have a wonderful holiday season!

BREAKING: USDA/APHIS no longer includes "related breeds" in Horse Protection Act Changes

USDA Announces Changes Aimed at Ending the Inhumane Practice of Horse Soring

Published: Jan 13, 2017
 Print

January 13, 2017--WASHINGTON-- The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today announced a final rule that includes changes that will help to protect horses from the cruel and inhumane practice known as soring and eliminate the unfair competitive advantage that sore horses have over horses that are not sore.  The practice of soring is intended to produce a high stepping gait through the use of action devices, caustic chemicals, and other practices that cause horses to suffer, or reasonably be expected to suffer physical pain, distress, inflammation, or lameness while walking or moving.

APHIS enforces the Horse Protection Act (HPA), a Federal law that makes it unlawful for any person to show, exhibit, sell, or transport sore horses, or to use any equipment, device, paraphernalia, or substance prohibited by USDA to prevent the soring of horse in such events.  APHIS works actively with the horse industry to eliminate such inhumane practices and the resulting unfair competition they create at HPA-covered events.

The final rule addresses recommendations made by the USDA’s Office of Inspector General following an audit of APHIS’ horse protection program, which found the existing industry-led inspection program to be inadequate for ensuring compliance with the HPA.  The rule also seeks to address the substantial noncompliance that continues to exist among Tennessee Walking Horses and racking horses and the relationship that continues to exist between the use of certain prohibited items and soring in horses, such as the use of permitted action devices alone or in conjunction with prohibited substances.

Under the final regulation—

  • APHIS will license, train, and oversee independent, third party inspectors, known as Horse Protection Inspectors (HPIs), and establish the licensing eligibility requirements to reduce conflicts of interest.
  • To allow sufficient time to train and license HPIs and ensure an adequate number before the start of the 2018 show season, current Designated Qualified Person (DQP) licenses will remain valid until January 1, 2018.  Beginning January 1, 2018, management of horse shows, exhibitions, sales, and auctions that elect to use inspection services, must appoint and retain a HPI to inspect horses.
  • Beginning January 1, 2018, the regulatory provisions applicable to Horse Industry Organization and Associations are removed and are no longer effective.
  • Beginning 30 days after the publication of the final rule, all action devices, except for certain boots, are prohibited on any Tennessee Walking Horse or racking horse at any horse show, exhibition, sale, or auction.  All pads and wedges are prohibited on any Tennessee Walking Horse or racking horse at any horse show, exhibition, sale, or auction on or after January 1, 2018, unless such horse has been prescribed and is receiving therapeutic, veterinary treatment using pads or wedges.  This delayed implementation allows ample time to both gradually reduce the size of pads to minimize any potential physiological stress to the horses and prepare horses to compete in other classes.
  • Beginning January 1, 2018, management of HPA-covered events must, among other things, submit certain information records to APHIS, provide HPIs with access, space, and facilities to conduct inspections, and have a farrier physically present to assist HPIs at horse shows, exhibitions, sales, and auctions that allow Tennessee Walking Horses or racking horses to participate in therapeutic pads and wedges if more than 150 horses are entered, and have a farrier on call if 150 or fewer horses are entered.

Congress passed the HPA to end the cruel and inhumane practice of soring horses and stop unfair competition.  Strenghtening the HPA regulations and the enforcement of alleged violations is the best way to achieve this goal.  In addition, the prohibitions on the use of action devices and pads (with certain exceptions) are consistent with recommendations made by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and leading industry standards for equestrian sports.

This final rule will be publish in the Federal Register in the coming days.  A copy of the rule that was submitted to the Federal Register can be viewed here

The changes regarding the prohibitions on the use of action devices and associated lubricants for exhibitors of Tennessee Walking horses and racking horses, along with the training and licensing of inspectors will be effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register.  The rest of the rule will be effective January 1, 2018.
