New York port terminal GCT Bayonne implements truck appointments in an effort to reduce congestion
Source: The Wall Street Journal

As of January 15, a container terminal in the New York Harbor operated by GCT USA LP, has started to accept reservations for trucks to pick up or drop off cargo. Located in Bayonne, N.J., terminal GCT Bayonne will require drivers to make an appointment if they want to enter the terminal in the first couple hours upon opening each morning. The objective is to eliminate long lines of trucks that are often present outside terminal gates, infesting traffic in surrounding neighborhoods, slowing operations and raising costs for drivers.

GCT Bayonne is the first terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey to require appointments. A few other North American ports already have similar reservation systems in place- including some of the nation’s biggest ports, Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Oakland, and Vancouver in British Columbia.

As GCT Bayonne currently handles the biggest ships that come to New York Harbor, the appointment system is one of several measures the terminal has undertaken to streamline operations, including using remote-controlled cranes, and other automation.
