How to Tune SQL Server Indexes with Execution Plans by Kendra Littlens - 09-03-2017

Abstract

SQL Server asks for a lot of indexes -- but it doesn't always ask for the right index! You need to know the essential principles of index design to create the best nonclustered index, filtered index, or indexed view to speed up your critical queries. In this example-packed day long session, you will work through a series of simple problems and solutions to learn how to create and tune disk-based, rowstore indexes. You will learn how to choose the right key columns, when included columns help, when to use special indexes, and how to avoid workload-killing gotchas. Throughout the day, you'll learn to use query execution plans to decode how SQL Server is using your index, and whether or not changing the index is likely to make your query even faster. You will see how SQL Server 2016’s Query Store feature offers you new tools for improving your indexes, and how Query Store compares to index Dynamic Management Views. You'll leave with all the scripts for the problems and solutions covered in the course.

Objectives:
Students will learn to:
  • Interpret execution plans to understand how indexes are being used
  • Use execution plan analysis to suggest index changes to improve query performance
  • Measure and record query performance accurately to document index efficiency and improvement
  • Critique and improve SQL Server's suggestions for indexes
  • Practice designing indexes, predicting how SQL Server will use them, and test the results
About Kendra Little:
Kendra Little teaches people to performance tune their SQL Servers. She is a Microsoft Certified Master in SQL Server, a Microsoft MVP, and one of the few artists in the world to draw both dinosaurs and databases.

Advanced Data Management with MDS by Tillmann Eitelberg and Gabi Múnster - 10-03-2017

Abstract

Are you struggling to get the single view of truth from your data?Businesses often have two concerns; they worry about data quality and they worry about where the data is. Their data may be perfectly correct, but with versions stored in multiple locations – and there is so much information across so many systems that it becomes hard to meaningfully bring it all together. With Microsoft SQL Server Master Data Services, companies can be master of their data (silos). MDS provides a single point of view that can be quickly and easily integrated into the existing landscape and provides good tools as web application or in excel to manage and maintain your data.In addition to the classic MDS tasks, you can quickly create solutions for a wide range of projects - wherever you need applications for data collection.

Objectives:
  • Learn the basics of Master Data Management and Microsoft Master Data Services
  • Learn how MDS can be integrated into your landscape
  • Enrich your analytical projects with MDS
  • Use MDS as a Rapid Application Development Tool

What the Hekaton?! How to Get 100X Faster Performance in SQL Server 2016 - 10-03-2017

Abstract

SQL Server Hekaton, aka In-Memory OLTP, will completely change the way you think about data management. As a DBA, you’ll need to analyze your memory and storage needs completely differently. All Hekaton data is always stored in memory, and the data stored on disk is basically just a REDO log used to regenerate the contents of your memory-optimized tables. In this full-day seminar, Kalen Delaney (a SQL Server MVP for over 23 years) will show you the in-memory architecture for your Hekaton data and indexes, and discuss what gets written to disk during checkpoints, as well as what gets logged. She will explain how the recovery process recreates your Hekaton tables. Finally, she’ll go into detail on just what it is that makes Hekaton so much FASTER!

Objectives:
Students will learn to:
  • Understand the storage structures used for In-Memory OLTP
  • Understand disk and memory usage for in-memory tables
  • Determine when In-Memory OLTP will be an effective solution for your environment
About Kalen Delaney:
Kalen Delaney has been working with SQL Server for 29 years, and provides advanced SQL Server training to clients around the world. She has been a SQL Server MVP since 1993 and has been writing about SQL Server almost as long. Kalen has spoken at dozens of technical conferences, including every PASS conference in the US and multiple TechEd events in both the US and Europe. Kalen is the author or co-author of many books on SQL Server, the most recent being SQL Server Internals: In-memory OLTP, from Redgate. She is one of the main editors for SQL Server Central’s SQL Server Stairways Series, http://www.sqlservercentral.com/stairway. Kalen’s website with her current training schedule is at http://www.SQLServerInternals.com. She blogs at www.sqlblog.com and tweets as @sqlqueen.
