Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Family,

On Friday, January 20th, we will have the second “College Day” of the year! This is a day specifically devoted to helping Everest meet our mission of preparing all of our students for college and career.

Our 9th & 10th grade students will be taking the English and Math MAP exams. The MAP exams are valuable exams for students because they give teachers valuable data on your student’s literacy and numeracy growth over the course of the year. This data is used to design different levels of support and instruction so that your student is benefitting from a personalized learning experience each day.

Our 11th grade students will spend the day taking practice tests to continue their preparation for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) exam, which they will take formally in May. This exam is significant because it is the best option for students to test out of taking remedial English and Math courses in college. We believe this simulation activity is one way to set our students up for success on the CAASPP.

Our 12th grade students will take one practice AP exam. When students earn a passing score on an AP exam, they earn college credit and save themselves significant time and money. This simulation experience will continue to prepare our students for success on their AP exams in May.

On this day, school will start promptly at 8:15. We expect all students to be present, and on time, for this important day.

Speaking of our college goals, we are very proud of our seniors and the effort they have been putting into the rigorous process of being accepted into their best fit college. As of right now, 96% of our seniors have applied to at least one four year university, and as of January 13th, we have 35% of our seniors already accepted to at least one four year college! This is ahead of pace from last year, and we feel the momentum continuing to build as we go further down the tracks. Join us in cheering on our amazing young scholars.  Go, Snow Leopards!

Lastly, in an effort to do everything we can to support you and your student for the college goals you have set. Everest will have three college information nights during the Spring. We encourage all families to attend at least one of these workshops with their student before the end of the year. The Everest College Readiness team and a variety of outside professional will be at these events to support you and your student in achieving your long-term college goals.

  1. Testing/ Financial Aid/ Scholarships Night  - January, 19th, 6:30pm-8:00pm @ Everest
Two concurrent sessions, one for 9th-11th families and one for seniors. 9th-11th families get a half hour inform on testing and an hour on financial aid. 12th grade students get a half hour inform on scholarships and an hour to search for and work on applications

  2. College Case Study Night - February 7th, 6:30pm-8:00pm @ Summit Prep
Several breakout sessions with various admissions counselors from both local and out of state schools walking participants through hands on activities that give firsthand knowledge about the process they use when deciding the fate of your student’s college application.

  3. Personalizing the College Process Night - April 4th, 6:30pm-8:00pm @ Everest
Many opt-in workshops for all students and families on topics like first generation college student tips and tricks, how to best prepare your student to be a strong candidate for highly selective schools, a starter guide to our college readiness online tool “Naviance,” and much more.

We are looking forward to being back to our regular project time classes starting on Tuesday! Until then, enjoy your day off on Monday, and we will do the same.

Much love,

Chris Lewine & Drew Moriates

Happy New Year from the EPO

College Education Night - Thursday, January 19th

Dear Parents,

On Thursday, January 19th at 6:30 pm, Everest and Summit Prep will have a college night at the Everest  location. We will have a session on college testing and financial aid that is especially relevant for junior families, but all families are welcome to attend. We will explain more about the standardized tests that students take in 11th grade in preparation for college, such as the SAT and ACT. We will also have an expert from a local college present about financial aid and the process of applying for it.

For seniors, we will hold a separate workshop at the same time on applying for college scholarships. Senior parents are welcome to attend, but we especially want students to attend so that they can work on scholarship applications with the support of teachers and mentors.

We hope you can join us!
Drew Moriates

Everest Community Night: Celebrate Our Diverse Community
We hope that you will put this event on your calendar (February 2, 2017 at 7pm) and join us!

Students, teachers, and families are all encouraged to participate in any or all of the three aspects of our Community Night celebrating the diversity of Everest:

1) Sharing - From clubs, to passions, to different religions and heritages -- we'll have tables set up all along the halls of Everest where you can share your diversity with everyone.
2) Performances - Have something to perform? Please let us know if you would like to sing, dance, give a speech, etc....we want to celebrate everybody and can't wait to see you on the stage! (email: lindamburt@gmail.com)
3) Food - Hungry? An event like this would not be complete without food and drinks that represent all our various cultures. Bring your favorite dish to share.

“Diversity” is a concept that is emphasized in the first few words of Everest’s mission. This event is a way for us to bring together students, families, and faculty to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. Each member of our community brings their own identity to our school, including things that we have in common and things that make us unique. Both aspects - our similarities and our differences - are worth recognizing and celebrating.

Please save the date - Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 7-8:30pm.

FUNdraiser Dinner - MONDAY, JANUARY 23RD
Please mark your calendar and join us for another fun dinner on Monday, January 23rd at the Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown Redwood City.

Everest will earn money for every dollar you spend at the restaurant! See you there!

Please Help with the Last Open House - Saturday, January 21st 9:30am-12:30pm

Please come help with the last Open House of the school year. Do you remember coming to check out Everest and all of the questions you had? Wasn't it great to talk with a current Everest parent and ask them how they liked the school? Wouldn't you like to be that parent? Or at least provide some food or drinks to help make the potential families feel welcome?

We need YOU!  Please sign up here. (Scroll to the bottom for the January 21st date).

Everest Athletics Update
Get Ready for Spring Baseball and Softball!

Time to start thinking about Everest Spring Sports......we will have Boys Baseball and Girls Softball teams!  Get your physical now, as all athletes must have that done and a completed sports packet turned in before they are eligible to tryout for the Everest athletics program. Please download the updated packet off of the everest.summitps.org/community-partners/athletics.  You can also pick up a copy in the new flyer folders by the teachers lounge entrance.  Students interested in playing winter sports should turn in the packet as soon as possible!   Please contact the Everest Athletics Directors at everestphsathletics@gmail.com if you have any questions or need any help.

Have a student interested in Sports Management?

Scorekeeping is one of the few ways that students within the Everest community can get involved in sports management. This opportunity will both show colleges that a student is a viable applicant for sports management programs and acquaint a student with the logistics of the field. The scorekeeper would only need to be present for games, so that's about a 2-4 hour commitment per week.

If you think your student is interested in this exciting opportunity, please email Ms. Lowe at hlowe@summitps.org.
