2016 Year in Review

 
Society Milestones

• Registered as a Society with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks.
• Received charitable status with the Canada Revenue Agency.
• Grew to 25 society Members along with 300 Supporters.

Society Accomplishments

• Installed 72 new crosswalk flag locations in HRM, bringing the total to 138.
• Facilitated 16 new crosswalk flag locations elsewhere in Nova Scotia (Digby, Lunenburg, Bridgewater and Shelburne) bringing the total to 38 with progress towards installations in Glace Bay and Mahone Bay.

• Developed and distributed a new pedestrian safety education brochure. If you would like copies to share at your work place, school, church, or anywhere else, simply let us know!
• Conducted a public survey about pedestrian safety. Click here to see the results.
• Received considerable media coverage including CBC, CTV, Global, Metro, Local Xpress, and News 95.7.
• Collected over $25,000 to support our work from businesses, individuals, associations, municipalities, Councillors (discretionary capital funds), memberships, and donations. (Click here for more details.)
• Successfully advocated for retaining pedestrian safety as a strategic Priority Outcome of HRM. After being absent from the original recommended list of priorities, Council agreed to add pedestrian safety as a priority.  The outcome reads:

 
Looking Ahead
 
Overall, vehicle-pedestrian collision experience during 2016 was mixed.  On the very positive side there were no fatalities.  On the other hand the number of ‘severe’ injuries has increased from two to five (to the end of November) and overall collisions are slightly higher at 183 versus 176 (again to the end of November).  In our view more needs to be done:
 

• More visibility at signalized and all-way stop intersections, i.e. ‘zebra’ markings and crosswalk flags.
• More engineering infrastructure, e.g. bump-outs.
• More enforcement by the police.

 
If you agree, let your councillor know how you feel. HRM Council has made pedestrian safety a strategic Priority Outcome.  Let’s make it more than words by increasing investment and action towards pedestrian/crosswalk safety.
