2017 DIARY DATES
PRESIDENTS ROAR
A bi-monthly segment

Welcome to 2017 in what is sure to be another great year of sport for The Blacks.

Our summer sports are well into their seasons and I know that many winter sports are already into their pre-season preparations.

Hopefully, many of you have had a chance to have a break from studying, thesis writing or working over the Christmas period and are ready to go for the New Year.

Over the break, I was lucky enough to spend a few cold weeks in Europe and managed to fit in some sporting highlights (or course). The first was to travel to the London Olympic Stadium on a freezing Saturday afternoon to join a crowd of 80,000 for the West Ham vs Crystal Palace Premier League match, which was terrific fun. (Hammers 3-0).  A week later, I walked through ankle deep snow to tour the Berlin Stadium, site of the 1936 Olympics.  It was quite moving to read the names of the Olympic champions with the great American sprinter, Jesse Owens, heading the list of gold medal winners. And to finish off, I put on my Blacks shirt (and beanie, jumper and track pants) and headed out into the sub-zero temperatures to run part of the Berlin marathon course, finishing with a run through the Brandenburg Gate. No finisher's medal, but I’ve never enjoyed a hot shower quite as much!

So, all the best for everyone’s endeavours in 2017.  And in particular, all the best to all AU Sport members as you participate in the many and varied sport and recreation opportunities that our great clubs provide.

Go the Blacks!

David Penn
AU Sport President
GET INVOLVED IN 2017

2017 is going to be another big year of sport at the University of Adelaide. As most of you know, getting involved with AU Sport activities and clubs provides you with the opportunity to put the books down, walk away from the computer screen, catch up with friends, get active and represent the University. There is something for everybody no matter what you level of interest, ability or availability.

It all starts with our club recruitment events - 'O Week' and 'Clubs in the Hub'. If you want to play weekly sport or get out regularly, join one (or more) of the 37 different sports clubs. If you are stretched for time maybe social sport events such as 'Sports on the Green', our fun 5 a side soccer and volleyball event or maybe Beach Sports Day in the city is more your thing.

If you what to pull on the Blacks uniform, enjoy representing this university and want to take on Uni SA and Flinders, register for SA Challenge where you can take part in a number of different sports over two weeks. Can we take home the trophy once again?

If you're not the activity type but enjoy supporting your fellow students, come out and support our Intervarsity Football team when they take on ANU in March.

All of these events and activities are taking place in the first couple of months in the semester and there will be many more to come throughout the year. So check out the Blacks website or one of our social media channels: Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Snapchat (aus_theblacks) for more information and remember to #backtheblacks.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT

CLUB DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

2017 is going to be an action packed year for club development and leadership training opportunities. Topics that will be covered in workshops this year include Marketing and Communication, Finance Management, Conflict Resolution, Risk Management and Planning.

The first session on Friday 10 February (just in time for O Week) will provide tips and ideas on what clubs can do to improve their marking and communication activities. Clubs that attended this workshop in 2016 were able to implement these ideas and saw a real impact at O Week and beyond. For more information on the Club Development and Leadership Program, or to register for the first workshop, click here.

AU SPORT GRANTS

AU Sport Grants are a great way clubs can gain access to additional funds to support the development of new projects, equipment purchases and assist the development of  elite athletes and coaches. Clubs are encouraged to look over the Grants Handbook, discuss their ideas with the AU Sport team and then apply. For more information click here.

COUNCIL MEETING

AU Sport Council meetings is a great opportunity for club representatives to come together and hear the latest news from the Board and staff. It is also a perfect chance to talk to other club representatives and find out how they manage similar tasks and issues. The first Council Meeting will be held on Monday 27 March and we look forward to seeing all clubs there.
