Questlove, J.R.R. Tolkien, Arrested Development, & So Much More!
How's 2017 treating you so far? I hope you're doing amazing and have high hopes for this year! I sure do. Welp, let's get right into this week's newsletter. 
   S O M E T H I N G   I   W R O T E    

During my teenage years and into my twenties, I acted like I wasn’t afraid of anything. Maybe I thought it made me look tough. Strong. Invincible. Or maybe it was because I grew up in Guatemala — one of the most dangerous countries in the world at the time — where we had to walk, talk, and act confidently so we didn’t stick out as potential prey for violent wrongdoers. I don’t really know. In retrospect, I probably looked like a fool for spending most of my life acting like I didn’t fear anything. Truthfully, I fear many things.

I’m fairly afraid of snakes.

I’m extremely afraid of heights.

I’m cripplingly afraid of something terrible happening to my children.

The list could go on and on and on but you get the picture. I come face-to-face with my fears everyday. So do you. And let me be clear, I’m fine living with some of these fears. I don’t care that I get a gut-wrenching feeling every time I lean over a fourth-story balcony. I don’t care that I step into the woods or wade through a creek completely prepared to karate chop the crap out of any snake I may encounter. But there are certain fears that I need to face head-on and conquer. Namely, the fear of failure.

Napoleon is right. Steve is right. J.K. is right. Michael, Winston, Seth, Gary — they’re all right. To summarize these phenomenal quotes, the way forward is to become acutely aware of our fear of failure and to, subsequently, overcome it. We should be completely fine with failing, as long as we fail forward (a little John Maxwell for you). In addition, don’t simply fail, fail publicly. If you’re going to fail, I want to see so I can learn from your failure(s). And vice-versa.

Is it really that simple? Yes, I think it is. Then why are so many people held captive to the fear of failure? I said it was simple, I didn’t say it would be easy. It is going to take a hell of a lot of work to overcome the fear of failure and become successful. Are you up for the challenge? I am.

1. Ahmir Khalib Thompson, or Questlove as you might know him, is an incredibly smart and interesting person. His brain is a musical encyclopedia and he holds over 10 jobs right now (if my memory serves me correctly). You won't want to miss this fantastic interview between he and Alec Baldwin

2. Arrested Development is coming back for a 5th Season! Season 1-3 were terrific. Season 4 (released on Netflix) left a lot to be desired. Here's to hoping they can right all their wrongs in this Season 5.

3. Are you a writer? Do you want to write more? I found this short interview with Jason Headley to be extremely helpful. This was my favorite line from the entire interview: "Write. And finish things. Don’t let yourself get bored by an idea after the initial thrill of it passes."

4. This Simon Sinek video on millennials and internet addiction has been making the rounds on the internet the last week or so. Fantastic and interesting thoughts from one of my favorite writers and thinkers. Give it a watch!

5. J.R.R. Tolkien reads "Sam's Rhyme of the Troll" in this rare recording. The first time I heard this, I almost cried. What an honor to be able to hear the voice of this literary icon and hero of mine! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

6. Are you going to make January 16th resolutions? I hope you do.

   S O M E T H I N G   I ' V E   B E E N  T H I N K I N G  A B O U T   
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I so badly wish I could have hung out with this man! My life has been deeply affected by the courage, hope, and love he displayed in the midst of hardship and evil.

I've been thinking about him—along with many other great men and women—this entire week leading up to this day. Here are a few of my favorite MLK quotes:
