Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon 2017
Swim Phase: Key Facts & Tips
Mary's Meals | Mercy Corps
Dear <<First Name>>

Are you dreading the swim?! You’re not alone, it’s something we hear from lots of Quadrathletes. Take it from us, the anticipation is usually worse than reality and, as far as we know, there is no Loch Tay monster lurking in the depths! Here are a few key facts about the swim:

Distance: 0.8mile (1.3Km) = 52 lengths of a 25m pool. Not as far as you might have thought?

Time: You have 60 minutes to complete the swim, that's 1 minute per 25 metre swimming pool length.

Temperature: There’s no denying it, it’s cold in the loch!  A balmy 14 degrees usually.

Kit: A full body wetsuit is compulsory. Swimming wetsuits are the most flexible. You can wear neoprene hats, boots or gloves but webbed toes/fingers are not allowed.

Swim Start: Considerably less brutal than some event starts due to smaller numbers (and 2 start times!). Strong quick swimmers can wade out to the front of the pack while slower less confident swimmers can hang back and wait for space.

Safety: We take your safety in the loch extremely seriously. You will be surrounded by a team of safety kayakers and rescue boats. Should you feel the need to catch your breath, have a wee rest, or to stop, help is never far away.

Tips: Swimming pool and open water swimming are very different! We have put together a list of a few of our top tips to make your 0.8 mile swim a little easier. READ MORE

Make a splash, raise lots of cash!
Are you doing more and more lengths every time you hit the pool to train? You could turn this into fundraising. Why not start a blog to let everyone know how you’re progressing with your training. Post updates on social media and pictures of your training too to encourage people to sponsor you! We would love to hear how your training is going, please email us and you could be featured in the next fundraising focus.

Mary's Meals

Introducing this year’s Mary’s Meals Quad team, Quadrophenia!
After volunteering at the Quad last year, Joe and I decided to sign up for the 2017 event. After all, how hard can it be? Now the excitement has finally settled, the size of the challenge has started to hit home. “Athletic” isn’t the word I would use to describe our team, so hours of training will be required for to get us into shape!
We had a look over the challenging Quad route and hit a stumbling block at the very first hurdle, Joe can’t swim! Thankfully, at the time of writing and after lots of training, Joe can now swim 20 lengths and has a new found love for the water! Hopefully this means we will be able to make our journey across Loch Tay in July.
However, it is important to remember that this small challenge pales in comparison to the daily challenges faced by children in the world’s poorest communities, where hunger and poverty prevent children from gaining an education.
By taking part in the UK’s toughest outdoor sporting event we are giving hope to children throughout the world by providing one daily meal in a place of education. I promise that the pain and struggle of being a Quadrathlete is definitely worth it!
Thanks to your fundraising, Mary’s Meals is now reaching 1,187,104 children globally (and feeding 880,383 children in Malawi.) On behalf of all the children receiving Mary’s Meals, thank you.
It would be great to hear on the Quad Facebook page any challenges you’ve come against and how you managed to overcome them. I look forward to updating you on our progress next month.
Lucy, Mary’s Meals Fundraising Support Officer Team Quadrophenia

Mercy Corps

We all remember the inspirational Yusra Mardini: the 18-year-old Syrian refugee who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games. Despite a dangerous journey from Syria to Germany, where she swam for her life in Greek coastal waters, Yusra continued her passion for swimming and became a member of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team.
It is girls like Yusra that Mercy Corps aims to support. Mercy Corps is a leading global organisation, working in over 40 countries, powered by the belief that a better world is possible. Our team has mounted one of the largest responses to the crisis in Syria, impacting the lives of more than 7.4 million people since 2012.
With your fundraising from the Quad, we can continue our work to help people across the world to reach their full potential. We hope that Yusra’s story will inspire you not only to fundraise, but to train hard for your Quad swim. Mercy Corps looks forward to seeing you in the waters of Loch Tay in July 2017!
